Active Niche? Find Out with Forums

2008 January 4

You’ve chosen your niche ideas, but is it an active niche? That’s the next thing you have to find out. How do you do that?

Forums ~ of course. Well actually you can use any place where people are gathered together to talk and interact about your niche topic. That can be forums, google groups, yahoo groups. The more active the forum or group, the more active your niche is. You will also be able to start getting an idea if people are passionate about this topic.

How do you find out if there are forums on your niche topic?

Google ~ of course. You can find out if there are forums on any given topic just by going to google and putting ‘”your niche” + forum’ in the search box. If your niche is more than one word I would encourage you to use the “”, if it’s only one word, you don’t need to.

This should bring up all the forums out there about your niche.

Is it an Active Niche? How do you tell?

Go in the forum. Is it an active forum? When was the last time someone posted? How many posts are on the “hottest” topics? How many views are threads getting? How many replies are people getting?

How many forums are there on this topic? If there is only one and no one has posted since May of 2005, your topic is not so “hot”. However, yesterday when I was looking through my chosen niches I found a forum that had over 20,000 posts on one thread and like 30 something thousand views. WOW. That’s an active forum. Most of the threads had many replies and even more views. There were also pages and pages of active forums for this topic.

That’s a topic you keep. :) (at least for the next step)

Today’s task is to go through your 10 niche ideas and look for forums for each of them. If there are many forums on your topic go to a few of what look to be the most popular (higher in the search) and make sure you right down the URL for each forum. (we’re going to use them later). If you can’t find forums, or they aren’t active, just cross that idea off and move on to the next niche idea.

Don’t dig and dig, if you can’t find forums right away, just cross that one off your list. We are trying to wittle down our choices to 3 or 4.

Good luck and have fun!
