Today I thought I’d take a quick break from the internet marketing and talk a bit about some more “mommy” type stuff.
Today’s my birthday. I’m another year older and now I’m doing it with a toddler, and working from home. I was looking in the mirror the other day, contemplating reaching my relatively “late” thirties and was not super happy with what I saw.
I saw someone who is not really taking time to take care of herself. Not eating as well as I can. Not exercising at all ~ minus the walks with Hanna, but they don’t really count since we stop ever 4 seconds to pick up rocks and other of nature’s treasures.
Hanna’s at the age where she repeats the lats word of every phrase I say. (I have to be really careful about phrases starting in OH and ending in a word I’d rather she didn’t say these days.
But anyway, I started thinking about the model I am being for health and fitness for her.
She sees me spend my days sitting in front of the computer, grabbing a bite to eat when it’s time for her lunch. She sees us eat in front of the TV, together, if and when Ryan makes it home from work before 9pm.
It is so interesting. When I was pregnant I was on the Bradley Diet and I ate just about perfectly. Tracking, monitoring, getting all the essential nutrients to take care of my body and grow this gorgeous baby. Now that she’s here, I’m eating like crap and doing nothing. What does this say to me, to her?
It says to me that I don’t value myself enough to make taking care of my body ~ taking care of her mother ~ a priority. It says to her eating right and exercising aren’t something you need to make a priority either.
That’s NOT what I think, and it’s NOT the message I want to be sending to her in these very formative years.
I have tried just about every diet plan imaginable. Some I got great results with, but nothing have I been able to turn into a lifestyle and maintain over the long term. I have done a lot of research on nutrition, and eating, and exercising, so I know what I need to do, I just haven’t been able to put it all together and stay motivated enough until it becomes a habit.
The plans I have had success with in the past were pretty rigid, and required a lot of time and energy to maintain. I am well aware I don’t have that kind of time and energy to focus on food and/or exercise right now. I went out and looked around. I wanted something easy, something quick, something with an effective exercise plan that didn’t take an hour a day I just don’t have and know I won’t do.
It took some searching, but I finally found Fit Yummy Mummy. wow. I am really impressed with this program. It is designed by a mom for moms. She understands the issues of being a busy mom and has written the program so it is flexible enough for anyone to manage around their schedule.
She sets up a very easy to follow diet lifestyle plan, no counting carbs, fats or calories. (Well you can count calories in the beginning just to give you an idea of how much you are eating). The eating plan is sensible and in one of the bonuses of the program she even shows her shopping list, and how it can be done cheaply on a budget. (I like that) There are built in “cheat” meals so you even get to eat whatever you want ~ once in a while. I like the fact nothing is off limits. As soon as I know I can’t have any ice cream, you know that ice cream craving hits and just won’t go away until I indulge!!
To help me plan meals and eat right I found this recipe site, that will send you 5 recipes every week including the shopping list. What’s really cool about this site, and different than other sites like this I have tried is they offer the information in the recipes and the shopping list for 2, 4, or 6 servings. You don’t have to do the math at all. Just follow the appropriate recipe or buy from the section of the grocery list for the number of people you need.
The recipes come on Wednesdays, right to your inbox. If you subscribe after Wednesday they send you a link to the whole month of recipes right away, so it’s not like you have to wait until the next week to get started.
I received my recipes and they are all recipes I will use and I think my family will eat. This will make life much easier!! They also offer some “kid” recipes, and you get some bonus recipes every month.
If you don’t like meal planning, this is a great way to get 5 of your meals for the week planned for you!
The exercise in Fit Yummy Mummy is also just as flexible. The program is set up so you only do 90 minutes of exercise per week. It is a mix of strength training and cardio. You can do 30 minutes 3 days a week, or you can do 15 minutes 6 days a week. Whatever works for you. You can even break up your 30 minutes a day into 15 in the morning and 15 at night. See what I mean, it’s really flexible.
The exercises are well laid out and easy to understand. In the beginning you only use your own body weight so you don’t even have to buy any equipment. Even toward the end the only equipment you need is a stability ball, a medicine ball and some dumbbells which can all easily be put away after workouts.
I have read through the whole plan, set some goals and I’m going to start Monday. I wanted to start today, my birthday to start a new year off right, but I have company and well you know lots of other excuses. lol
I do know about myself that I am horrible about follow through with changing my diet and exercise habits so I decided to start a new site, let’s say a “sister site” for this one. It will focus on my journey with Fit Yummy Mummy and changing my eating habits.
I’m going to have kitchen tips, recipes, fitness info ~ and who knows what else. So I’d also like to have this up and running before I get started. The url will be www.FitandHealthyMomma.com ~ but it’s not up yet.
So come by on Monday and make sure I’m getting started right. We can even do it together ~ support one another!
OHHH one more thing I forgot, there is also a great and very active community that comes along with Fit Yummy Mummy. In fact, the author of the ebook Holly Rigsby is there every day, rooting for people, answering questions, motivating and inspiring everyone. It’s a very friendly place with groups you can join to help you stay motivated and meet other moms facing the same challenges as you.
So why not pick up Fit Yummy Mummy today, read it, set some goals for yourself? Why not get started with me on Monday?
It’s just like I mentioned in the last post (I think) if you don’t take action you’re going to look back and wonder ~ What if . . . ~ where would I be if . . . Don’t wonder. Take action. Myself, I’m working for a little less padding on my office chair! What about you? Are you worth it, to take that step to make a healthier, fitter you, not only for yourself? But for your children? Are you ready to be the role model they need to build healthy attitudes and ways of life around food and exercise? I am!! Let’s get started.

I completely agree with you. I always think I'm going to do it when Hanna's taking a nap, but then I have some quiet time to actually get some work done and do that instead. I think FYM is going to be good because it's only 90 minutes a week. You can break it down into 30 minutes or even only 15 minutes a day. I do need to plan when I'm going to work out, write it down and stick to it. Make it as important as a conference call!! I just wrote a post on planning at Fit and Healthy Momma. You might like it.
