Building Backlinks and Promoting Your Site with Google Knol

Jun 08

I hope by now you know just how important it is to create links back to your site, whether it’s a Squidoo lens or an authority site. These links back to your site are what will help you move up in the search engine rankings.  With better rankings for your chosen keywords, comes an increase in web traffic.

Google Knol

Google knol is another place you can publish your content for free. This is one of the easiest places I’ve found to create content. You simply go to Google knol:

Sign in and then click “write a knol”. This will open a text editor for you to put your content into. Google knol is quite different than Squidoo in that you can just paste an entire article in there. There’s no place for all the extras that Squidoo provides, it’s simply information.

Google knol is great to use to repurpose your Ezine articles or blog posts if you have a blog. You can simply go to Google Knol, maybe rewrite your first paragraph and then paste it right in.

Since the point doing this is to create links back to your lenses you will need to go into the content and create some links within the content. This is pretty easy since there is a text editor. Just highlight the keywords you’re trying to get your lens to rank for, and then click the chain link icon in the tool bar. It will open a box where you can put in the url for your lens. When you click save it will create the link back to your lens.

Google knol is still relatively unused. It’s my thinking that whenever you can get a link from Google directly ~ you should do it.

Speaking of which, it was while doing a knol that I realized Google now gives you a profile space. You can fill it in with keyword anchor text links to your sites ~ I’d go ahead and fill in your info, upload a picture and then add some links to your best lenses ~ it can only help to get links from Google.

If you’re not taking advantage of Google Knol yet, what’s stopping you? Get on over and fill in your Google profile and create a couple knols. Who knows you might find it becomes your favorite place to create content on the web.

  1. I thought I’d read all your articles on linking, but this is the first time I saw this one. Time to head on over to Google Knol and see what I can do. Thanks for the tip.

PS- I just published my 50th lens this morning since starting following you. Couldn’t have done it without all your great help!

I keep getting comment updates of this article, each time bringing me back to my intention of writing a Knol, inspiring me to continue on with my plan. The last time I got an update, it motivated me to want to actually start writing on my Knol, but when I went to the site, it said that the profile I had set up was blocked. Everything still seemed to work, and I was even able to update my profile, but I couldn’t get rid of the “blocked” message or even find out why I was being blocked. The moral of the story is, Google Knol has absolutely no place to contact other than other user’s “help” Knols. Knol has no official email address, much less a phone number, so in reality with Knol your on your own.

  3. Lately I read one blog that says that the Google cancel out the reciprocal links. But in your blog you says that Google knol is one of the easiest way of having a banklinks for your site. My question is, does Google knol is different from Google?. Maybe I should try it later.

A reciprocal link is a link that points to your site, and then you point back to the same site from yours. Adding a knol and linking to your site isn’t reciprocal ~ unless you link to the knol from your site.

When I first checked Google Knol’s dofollow/nofollow policy, they were only giving dofollow links to “trusted authors” who had been writing Knols for a while already. However, recently, I discovered that they had changed their policy. In Google’s own words:

Google Knol Dofollow Policy (according to knolhelp@google.com)

“When Knol launched, we began with all pages marked with a blanket “nofollow” directive. This means that Google and other search engines would not crawl outbound links from knols, and those links would not flow PageRank to the pages to which they point. The advice Google provides webmasters is to make links “nofollow” if they represent untrusted or low quality user contributed content.

We are now at a point where we “trust” a certain fraction of authors and a certain proportion of user contributed links, and so we now use a “follow” directive for links within such knols.

Not all links are “follow”. Some links will permanently remain rel=”nofollow”, including:

    Links found within comments
Our automatically generated links to “similar content on the web”.
Brand new pages and recently-added authors are liable to remain “nofollow” for a period of time.

Beyond that, the rules determining which links and pages use “follow” vs “nofollow” will change over time as we adjust our policies to find the right balance for users and search engines”

I hope this ends the Google Knol dofollow/nofollow uncertainty.

God Bless you Jackie Lee and all your Readers!

  7. Thanks Jackie, I started writing in Knol and do some research and poof! I found your site, I guess it will take time before my article will be indexed in Google but Knol is a good opportunity to build backlinks, better than some article directories out there.

By the way thanks for the commentluv, took advantage of it and put in my keyword.

    Great article. Great lead.

After I read your post on Knols, I went over to the site and found a great Knol on one of my subjects of interest. I added a coment, which got me wondering if Knol comments are do-follow or no-follow? This might be a good question for a follow up.

Anyway, because of your great posts, I am going to start dividing up my “content for links” between Squidoo, HubPages, Knol, Blogger and WordPress.

  12. Honestly, this is the first time I ever heard of Knol. I’m glad I got here. Knol been around for a while now, the date for your post is 8th June 09′. I have a lot thing with exploring now. Thanks for this precious information :)

  13. thanks, this is unique idea for link building,

    Thanks for posting.

  14. Unfortunately Google already announced that Google knol will not carry over any weighted Google Juice.

However, it is a great way to get another very high authority page in the SERPs for your name, plus some nice entry points for the spider to start indexing your site.

  15. I appreciate the link to Knol’s self explanation on it’s outbound linking, it sounds alot like Hubpages way of doing things. However, I still need to do some testing to see just how much link value the dofollow links actually provide. For example, Google Profile pages have dofollow links and provide no value since they are on Google’s domain.

I am not saying that they don’t pass value, just wouldn’t be surprised if they passed less value. Either way, another great resource to get your content in the SERPs and site indexed.

    Nas,

The links from comments are no follow ~ and as for the links within your knol it depends on the quality of your content and how long you have been building knols.

Here’s some info from Knol itself: http://knol.google.com/k/knol-help/follow-vs-nofollow-links-in-knol/si57lahl1w25/90#

Hope that helps ~ also remember all links count for Yahoo and other search engines. Not everyone uses no follow ~ just google. :)

  17. Are the links from google knol do follow or no follow, that is what really matters when thinking about page rank

  18. Knol is indeed a little underused; I think it is a great tool to link subsidiary and secondary sites that you want to use for sending one-way links to your main site… or link to the Knol post from a number of sources, give it a boost and send a one-way link from your Knol post to your main site or blog. I think this will help.
