If you are new to internet marketing and building backlinks with blog comments you need to read this post. I’m not sure if I am attracting brand spanking new internet marketers to my sites or if people just don’t know what they are doing ~ but it’s getting a little annoying.
Here’s what’s going on, and how you can avoid annoying the heck out of blog owners everywhere.
I spend time and effort putting together a nice blog post. Depending on where it’s to be posted I provide some information, or sometimes a little insight, and sometimes even just a laugh. No matter what I’m writing, I’ve spent time and effort to do it.
I see in my inbox I have a comment on my blog ~ I have a pretty nice readership on my main blogs and I look forward to interacting with them in the comments section, so I still get a little happy when I see comments come through.
I open the email only to see some crazy stupid completely non relevant comment encouraging me to do this or that, click here, click there ~ oh yeah, enjoyed your space. WHAT???
If you enjoyed my space ~ well change that ~ if you had even read anything on my space you would know what you just posted has absolutely NOTHING to do with what I’ve written, and even moreso has nothing to do with this whole site at ALL.
Here’s one I received today on a post about finding cool and fun ways to get through the mind numbing activities that internet marketing sometimes entails (I am of course going to strip out all the html and the guys name ~ you know to keep the uilty from feeling bad)
Hi,
Enjoyed your space.
Please take a look at Name of his website (removed by me)
Next, if you twitter add me – removed by me
I am following the top internet marketers in the world today.
Name Removed
P.S. Also, be sure to click on place to get leads (removed by me)
if you struggle with finding leads.
OK ~ how much does that have to do with anything I was talking about???? This was on my other WAHM blog and I certainly don’t talk about anything having to do with needing leads there ~ or here for that matter.
I also have been getting the random comment very similar to this one, only the software they are touting on their irrelevant and seriously annoying spam blog comment is something I probably would have used. Do you think I’m going to buy something from them now, after they have spammed my blog about it on several different occasions? Absolutely NOT is the answer.
Although ramblings rants do help me feel a little better, they don’t really do anyone else any good so let’s talk about how to make good and helpful blog comments for some decent backlinks.
Building backlinks by commenting on blogs is a good way to get backlinks and depending on the blog you are commenting on you can also get traffic back to your site just from the comment itself.
There is however, a right and a very wrong way to do this.
The first step is to find blogs that are relevant to your site. This is huge. No one wants to hear about submission software when they are talking about weaning a toddler ~ it’s just not your market so don’t waste your time, the comment will not even make it to the light of day.
You can also look for blogs that are relevant and also use one of these plugins ~ commentluv or linkluv. Commentluv, in case you don’t know will go back to your blog and grab your last post and put a link to it using the title of your blog post under your comment. Linkluv will let you put your name and then your keywords linked to your site next to it. When your comment comes out it might look like this Jackie from Internet Marketing Strategy for Moms and then my comment beneath.
Both of these are great ways to get your anchor text backlinks. Yeah I know not everyone uses those plugins, and especially not on non IM related sites. But you can use the new Comment Kahuna to search for comment luv blogs, which makes thema little easier to find. You can also bookmark or subscribe to the rss feed of ones you find using linkluv and commentluv so you can keep track of them, but also see when new posts come out.
It’s best to look around and see if other commenters are doing this ~ as it will give you a feel for if the blog owner allows it or not. If you see others doing it then you can go ahead and use your keywords in the Name field of your comment. Then put your email and url in. When the comment publishes it will link your keywords from the name field to your url and you will have an anchor text link back to your site.
Now don’t do this if you don’t see anyone else doing this, or if it seems like a site where everyone knows one another and they are all having a great conversation. You will look, whether you are meaning to be or not, like a blog comment spammer.
If you are only looking for blogs to comment on to get backlinks then just keep looking for another blog that is better suited to your needs, don’t interrupt an entire community with your comment.
Let’s say you’ve found a site that has one of the plugins or it seems to be ok to use keywords in your name field. Then how do you write your comment? What do you say?
All your backlinking has already been done. You should say NOTHING of your site in the comment. You should make a comment about what you read in the post, or respond to something another commenter has said, or add a little something new to what was posted. In other words ~ you make a blog comment. LOL
Look folks this isn’t hard stuff. I think people try so hard, and they think everything they say has to be about their keywords or their site, but blog commenting is a social way to get traffic and links. Once your link work has been done, either by commenting on sites that have one of those plugins or let you put your keywords in the name field, go be social. That’s the point.
Ok, today’s rant is over. I hope on the corners of the rant you have learned a little about making blog comments the right way. As we know, it’s all about the links ~ so don’t think I’m discouraging you from using blogs for links, just do it the right way. If you’re going to leave comments on blogs, make sure that you’re giving value to the on-going conversation, if there is one. If you’re going to be the first commenter, be on topic. Don’t be like some robot made to just drop links here and there.
I have found that my “nofollow” blogs still show up to help the site. I don’t think it matters where you post, just make relevant posts and lots of them. Also, its getting harder and harder to find any dofollow blogs out there, especially ones with a high PR in your associated topic.

So sorry you are having this problem. I am sure it is happening to others as well. Bloggers should be sensitive to the content of the article they are reading and quit trying to spam. It makes all of us look bad. Keep up your good work and do not let these dorks discourge you!
Great article. While I agree with almost everything that you said, lately I have been wondering if it is really prudent to focus only on do-follow comments. O.k., Google says it doesn’t follow them, fine. Yahoo and MSN still do, right? And I’m not quite sure if Google might not peek at them — after all, truly “natural” link growth would still involve no-follow links. Of course, as with most Google thought this is pure speculation. However, Yahoo and MSN traffic is worth consideration also.
I totally agree with you. I don’t think I’ve ever recommended only finding do follow links. I think a variety of links, do follow, no follow, and from a multitude of sources is always best.
Yes blog commenting helps to increase inbound links, But you should check weather the blog allows do follow attribute or not. If you comment on no follow attribute blogs , You are not going to get any thing of it. So make a list of do follow blogs, try to write relevant comment on the topic or relate to the post. Otherwise blog admin won’t approve your post.
That is true … and yahoo doesn’t worry about no follow, and it’s also good to get a variety of links ~ if you get only do follow links it is not going to look naturaly. It’s important to get a variety of links ~ and if you’re posting good, relevant comments on related blogs you can also get traffic from the comments themselves.
I would NOT suggest you every leave a link to your site in the content of your comment. I hate it ~ and I bet most other bloggers do as well.
If there is no keywordluv or commentluv then just use your name and the url. It will count as a link, not the best link, but a link. Look around the blog and see what other people do as well. You could do Name @ your keywords ~ and it will link all of it so you will get your kws linked, but not all people will tolerate that so look at what other people are doing first.
Have you seen the latest post I did on commentluv ~ you might find that helpful.
Hi Jackie,
Sorry if you covered this–I have been reading through many post and I am still a little confused. If you leave a comment on a blog with Keywordluv–you use your keyword after your name-is it ok to use the same keywords from your url?–we have very niche specific blogs– Then you don’t need to put your link in the comments section? Is that correct?
If you are leaving a comment on a blog without keyword luv you don’t put the keyword after your name, you put the url in and you put a link to your blog in the comments section. Is this correct? Thank you for all your information, I appreciate everything you do!!
Hi Jackie
This post is very educational. You have provided a lot of good
information and I’m glad I happened to come on this blog.
I have a website which I have had for my business for about a year but I have only been blogging about two weeks, and was glad to find your tips. I still co not understand some of the comments being made on here-
Here is my blog( could use feedback) : http://caughtinthemiddleoflife.blogspot.com/
I find myself torn between writing about work and writing about my kids. It sounds like many people have multiple blogs?
thanks
i have been building backlinks. i have made about approx 150 in the last few days. Currently im getting on average of 600 visits per day.
Thanks, good article! Maybe someone needs backlinkchecker? Try http://www.BackLinkStat.com.
Thanks for sharing and this very useful for information.
Yep, somehow blogs turned from a way for people to vent (and rant) to a money making proposition. But I say, lets do both. Have fun with your blog and you’ll attract people also looking fun and socialization on a personal level!
Amazing Post
have a question for you, why more than 4000 blog is not using the nofollow system? whether they are blogs that have not been applying the concept of spam in comment form?
Building backlink with comment blog is very easy and quickly. But backlink has value when blog you comment dofollow. So you must have list dofollow blog
thanks. Let me ask you, if I use 000web(free hosting) subdomain, will it rank as high as wordpress?
I just discovered comment luv, and it works great!
Got very nice and new knowledge.keep writing.
Hi there,
This is a very educative post, please keep on talking about backlinks, because without backlinks then there can be no traffic. I also like your information on going social. These two things are here with us for a long term and are a good way to increase traffic.
I have been following up on this blog for a while and i find it very impressive. I plan to add it to my rss feeds
This post is really a must bookmarked for me! Thank you so much.
I have been looking for good webhost, do you know how I can get cheap webhost? If so, can you provide more information on this? I am subscribed to your rss to check if you are going to post something on web host or domain. I want to start my own website
Nice writing style. Looking forward to reading more from you.
It’s better if your links are on a related and relevant blog yes.
Jackie
Does the blog we post to need to be around our niche in order to rank higher?
Can you provide more information on this?
OMG You would not even believe what I’ve been going through this weekend.
I’ve gotten over 40 spam comments that got through Akismet ~ all the same guy. These are paragraphs long ~ very long. They don’t make ANY sense whatsoever!! Soooo aggravating. They were only showing up on ONE post of one of my other blogs.
I finally blacklisted the IP address and that seems to have done the trick.
Come on ~ do you really think that’s getting through and you’re going to get any credit for that??
NOPE.
Jackie
Yea, akismet catches most of the comment spam for me (the wordpress pluging) but here was one I got hit with the other day – on 6 different blogs, on every single post! “Hi, nice blog, but just wanted to let you know your site doesn’t display right for ABC.” There were about 6 variations of the ABC for different browsers. The first time I saw it I thought oh – good to know! But after tons and tons of them I realized it was just clever spam! It did make me laugh though, some dumb bunny sure went to a lot of trouble to get backlinks! (By the way, I am in the market for a bridge, can you hook me up???)
Jackie…
I so appreciate you… for a ‘rant’ post this one is so rich with value! You share not only resources but the how and why to use them. Thank YOU!!!
~~Mary K
Hi Jackie, I absolutely agree with you, the less spam comments and spam emails – the better the world we live in.
Hi Jackie,
Today must be rant day. I just got done writing a rant post about automated twitter DM spam.
Your advice about commenting on dofollow/commentluv/keywordluv blogs is spot-on. I have all 3 of those plugins installed. I like and encourage comments, but I’m also still pretty quick with my trigger finger when it comes to sending irrelevant or off-topic comments off to akismet land.
I know that One of the reasons people are taking the time to comment on my blog is to get a link … but it should Never appear obvious that it’s the Only reason they are there.
As long as you keep on topic, and at least make an effort to add some value, commenting is definitely a great way to meet interesting new people
Todd
Hey Deliese,
You don’t actually use the plugins ~ the sites you are on do.
It’s just something they have added to their sites to help others out. If you’ve been to PotPieGirl you might notice her site uses the commentluv plugin. So if you made a comment on her site it would pull up the last post from whatever site you put in the url spot.
If you don’t have blogs it doesn’t work quite as well. I’m not sure what would come up if you put a lens in the url space in the form, but you could try and see what happens.
Comment kahuna just helps you find blogs that are on your topic ~ not a necessity, but makes life easy if you are going to do a lot of blog commenting.
Jackie
Hi Jackie,
This was very helpful information for me. Although I know enough about not spamming on blogs. I didn’t realize the importance of commenting on blogs that are similar to what I am doing for back links.
Using the plug ins that you mentioned currently make no sense to me, but I’m learning. I really appreciate the guidance you are providing here.
Deliese
Hey Lexi,
Instead of linking to the home page of your site, just link to the specific post. Use your related keywords in the name field, and if people are interested they will click through.
Sometimes the comment luv plugin will also let you choose which post you want to display ~ if you can choose the related post from your site.
HTH,
Jackie
Well you know … I have this bridge, I mean this site that I really truly think you pretty please oughta go take just a quick peek at …
ROFLOL – just kidding
Really tremendous post Jackie – you never fail to impress me with your ability to find a silver lining – no matter how POed you might be – grin.
Appreciate you!
Andrea
Jackie, this is one of the best posts on the topic that I have read. I am always worried about coming across as spammy even when I’m really just commenting and not trying to get backlinks. Now I can feel more confident.
A question: what if you have a related post on your site. How do you mention that without looking like a spammer?
Thanks in advance!
