If you are new to internet marketing and building backlinks with blog comments you need to read this post. I’m not sure if I am attracting brand spanking new internet marketers to my sites or if people just don’t know what they are doing ~ but it’s getting a little annoying.
Here’s what’s going on, and how you can avoid annoying the heck out of blog owners everywhere.
I spend time and effort putting together a nice blog post. Depending on where it’s to be posted I provide some information, or sometimes a little insight, and sometimes even just a laugh. No matter what I’m writing, I’ve spent time and effort to do it.
I see in my inbox I have a comment on my blog ~ I have a pretty nice readership on my main blogs and I look forward to interacting with them in the comments section, so I still get a little happy when I see comments come through.
I open the email only to see some crazy stupid completely non relevant comment encouraging me to do this or that, click here, click there ~ oh yeah, enjoyed your space. WHAT???
If you enjoyed my space ~ well change that ~ if you had even read anything on my space you would know what you just posted has absolutely NOTHING to do with what I’ve written, and even moreso has nothing to do with this whole site at ALL.
Here’s one I received today on a post about finding cool and fun ways to get through the mind numbing activities that internet marketing sometimes entails (I am of course going to strip out all the html and the guys name ~ you know to keep the uilty from feeling bad)
Hi,
Enjoyed your space.

P.S. Also, be sure to click on place to get leads (removed by me)
if you struggle with finding leads.
OK ~ how much does that have to do with anything I was talking about???? This was on my other WAHM blog and I certainly don’t talk about anything having to do with needing leads there ~ or here for that matter.
I also have been getting the random comment very similar to this one, only the software they are touting on their irrelevant and seriously annoying spam blog comment is something I probably would have used. Do you think I’m going to buy something from them now, after they have spammed my blog about it on several different occasions? Absolutely NOT is the answer.
Although ramblings rants do help me feel a little better, they don’t really do anyone else any good so let’s talk about how to make good and helpful blog comments for some decent backlinks.
Building backlinks by commenting on blogs is a good way to get backlinks and depending on the blog you are commenting on you can also get traffic back to your site just from the comment itself.
There is however, a right and a very wrong way to do this.
The first step is to find blogs that are relevant to your site. This is huge. No one wants to hear about submission software when they are talking about weaning a toddler ~ it’s just not your market so don’t waste your time, the comment will not even make it to the light of day.
You can also look for blogs that are relevant and also use one of these plugins ~ commentluv or linkluv. Commentluv, in case you don’t know will go back to your blog and grab your last post and put a link to it using the title of your blog post under your comment. Linkluv will let you put your name and then your keywords linked to your site next to it. When your comment comes out it might look like this Jackie from Internet Marketing Strategy for Moms and then my comment beneath.
Both of these are great ways to get your anchor text backlinks. Yeah I know not everyone uses those plugins, and especially not on non IM related sites. But you can use the new Comment Kahuna to search for comment luv blogs, which makes thema little easier to find. You can also bookmark or subscribe to the rss feed of ones you find using linkluv and commentluv so you can keep track of them, but also see when new posts come out.
It’s best to look around and see if other commenters are doing this ~ as it will give you a feel for if the blog owner allows it or not. If you see others doing it then you can go ahead and use your keywords in the Name field of your comment. Then put your email and url in. When the comment publishes it will link your keywords from the name field to your url and you will have an anchor text link back to your site.
Now don’t do this if you don’t see anyone else doing this, or if it seems like a site where everyone knows one another and they are all having a great conversation. You will look, whether you are meaning to be or not, like a blog comment spammer.
If you are only looking for blogs to comment on to get backlinks then just keep looking for another blog that is better suited to your needs, don’t interrupt an entire community with your comment.
Let’s say you’ve found a site that has one of the plugins or it seems to be ok to use keywords in your name field. Then how do you write your comment? What do you say?
All your backlinking has already been done. You should say NOTHING of your site in the comment. You should make a comment about what you read in the post, or respond to something another commenter has said, or add a little something new to what was posted. In other words ~ you make a blog comment. LOL
Look folks this isn’t hard stuff. I think people try so hard, and they think everything they say has to be about their keywords or their site, but blog commenting is a social way to get traffic and links. Once your link work has been done, either by commenting on sites that have one of those plugins or let you put your keywords in the name field, go be social. That’s the point.
Ok, today’s rant is over. I hope on the corners of the rant you have learned a little about making blog comments the right way. As we know, it’s all about the links ~ so don’t think I’m discouraging you from using blogs for links, just do it the right way.
