When you put together a product you’re going to have to put a price on it. For me this is the hardest part of the process… I can crank out content ’til the cows come home, but ask me to put a value on my stuff?! yikes.

When thinking about price point you have to take into consideration the work you’ve put in and the value of that work, but more importantly you have to consider what people will get out of it. How will their work/life/whatever change from using your product and what might that be worth?

Remember, this is business, not trading hours for dollars. You don’t want to look at your product and think, “well, it took me 47 hours to put together and get going… and I want to make this many dollars per hour”. That just isn’t a good way to go about it. Your product, once it’s finished and live, will be out there forever. (or until you take it down) You can continue to make money from this product long long after you’ve finished the “work” of it.

So how do you price your product?

I have no idea. Seriously. You don’t want to put the price too high so people just don’t buy, but you also don’t want to put the price too low because people will think it’s not valuable. It’s a very difficult thing to do. If you have some people online that are would be customers… a survey is always a great way to test the waters. You can ask theoretically what they’d be willing to pay for what you’re putting together. (and don’t pick the lowest price mentioned lol).

The thing is, this business is fluid. Even if you find your product isn’t selling at the price point you’ve chosen you can do things to test if it’s actually the price that’s the problem. Price may NOT be the problem… it maybe the sales page or maybe people just don’t want the product you’ve put together ~ but I know you asked your customers exactly what they wanted to buy before you started working right?!

Run a Sale

If you’re product isn’t selling, have a sale. Change the price for a couple weeks and let everyone know there’s a sale on and see how it does. If your sales increase tremendously you know there may be an issue with the pricing.

I personally have noticed this with a product I promote as an affiliate. The company had a nice product. It sold for 97 dollars. I used to make 5 or 6 sales a month.

Then they upgraded the product, made it fancier, included some additional bells and whistles and upped the price to 197 dollars. Sales completely dropped off. I didn’t make one sale for months. (I had the same traffic, from the same places going to their new sales letter and price).

They offered a sale… back to the original pricing. They did their sale for a month. I made 5 or 6 sales again that month. Price went up… no more sales.

It became seriously obvious to ME what was going on. I emailed them recently to ask a couple questions and they informed me they are going to change the price permanently to the old pricing. The market just wouldn’t pay 197 for this particular product. It’s a great product. I love it. I use it. I would not have paid 197 for it. So I look forward to a day soon, when they change the price and I can get that income stream back.

I’ve had similar issues with my Backlinking 101 program. I had plenty of emails and contacts with people telling me what they wanted. I created just that… and then sales were not exactly what I had expected. I am currently running a sale on Backlinking 101 to see what happens… to do some testing to see if my price point may be the issue. People are definitely getting huge benefits from the program… that I know from emails/kiss club comments/comments on the site, but people just aren’t buying at the rate I had expected.

I’ll let you know the results of my sale later, and what I learned from running it.

Internet marketing, and creating your own products can be a scary thing. However, if you don’t jump in, you’ll never know how successful you could have been. I’ve been reading Do The Work (over and over again) recently and these two phrases really made me think about the work I (and you) do online:

Don’t Prepare: Begin.

Start before you’re ready.

If you’ve been thinking about starting a product of your own, a new blog, a new business, monetizing what you’ve already got going… whatever you’ve been “thinking about doing”… stop. Start right now… before you’re ready. Stop preparing and just begin. Really. You can always veer a little left if you see you’re going the wrong way.

So yeah… there’s my little pep talk for the day. The sale on Backlinking 101 ends tomorrow at 8pm Central time. While I’m no expert on pricing a product I’d be glad to get into conversation about it if you have questions and you want to take action NOW!!

Once you’ve got your product put together, zipped up and ready to deliver you’re going to have to decide on what that delivery process is going to be. This can be one of the scariest things, especially if you have no idea how it works! I know I was a little wobbly knees the first time I had to go through the process.

It’s especially hard when you don’t even know what the options are, or how the process works. So let’s start there.

When you have your product finished you’ll have to decide on a delivery system. This is where you will upload your product and the service will then send it to the buyer. Once you’ve got this set up the whole process is really hands off and you won’t really need to worry about much (except customer service).

If you’re doing just a regular downloadable product there are a couple clear choices, and I think they both have pros and cons.

E-junkie

This is where I started with my product delivery. (I still use it for many things today). E junkie is cheap and very reliable. That’s definitely a pro. It’s 5 bucks a month ~yeah seriously. I was waiting and waiting for the other shoe to drop the whole way through the process, I just couldn’t believe it was so cheap. But it is. (at least until you get 10 products in your account, then it goes up to 10 bucks a month)

E-junkie is super simple to use. You open an account. Go to the admin area, and click upload product. Set the price, and fill in any other info they ask for and then they will give you a button which you copy/paste into your page. They work seamlessly with paypal. When someone makes a purchase, the money will go directly into your paypal account.

They will send your product to the buyer using a secured link ~ which will only be good for a certain amount of time. People are only allowed 5 attempts to download. This is really nice because you limit the amount of theft that can go on of your product somewhat.

The only problem with e-junkie is if you’re going to have affiliates, and it’s not really a problem. You have to pay all your affiliates. It’s pretty simple you go into your account, get a list of payments and then go to paypal and send your payments. It just means that YOU are responsible for paying your affiliates and you need to be on time, and do it, so you don’t create a bad reputation for yourself.

Clickbank

This is the second option, and I have one product currently listed in Clickbank. The process is a little more complicated. You have to set up a seller account at clickbank. There are specific things Clickbank requires you to include in your sales page. You have to submit your product to them and they must review it.

I didn’t have any problems getting my product accepted, but it does take a few days. Once you’re approved you fill in the information that will allow them to deliver the product.

Clickbank does not go directly to paypal. Your sales will add up in your clickbank account and once you’ve reached the threshold and jumped through the Clickbank hoops to receive your first payment you’ll begin to receive checks every other week. (or you can have your money direct deposited)

The good thing about Clickbank is that they take care of everything… they pay your affiliates, take out everything and you don’t have to worry about taxes for your affiliates or any of that because clickbank does it all. They do take a percentage of every sale (which I believe is like 7%) and it costs a 1 time fee of 49.95 to have your product approved and added to the Clickbank marketplace.

Affiliates:

Ejunkie and Clickbank both offer affiliate programs ~ but I do want to mention, that just because your product is listed in the clickbank marketplace doesn’t mean affiliates will be banging your door down. You will still have to do the work to attract affiliates, they don’t come automatically because your product’s listed.

Products quickly become buried in the marketplace, and it can be tough to find affiliates.

So what do I recommend?

Well… if you’re new to the business and this is your first product, I’d probably recommend you go with e-junkie. It’s cheap, and easy, and you probably won’t be messing with affiliates. If your product takes off, then you can always move it to Clickbank ~ which is what I ended up doing. That process just means creating a new button so the payments will go where they need to go, which is not that complicated.

I hope this helps clear up the delivery process, if you’ve got questions please feel free to ask in the comments, I’ll do my best to answer!

Does the whole idea of building a site and a business based on something you’re passionate about, something you really love totally freak you out?

Do you wonder things like “How will I monetize that?” or “What kind of product would I ever create in that niche?”

I know those questions have gone through my mind more than once in my internet marketing career and even moreso in the last couple weeks as I take a look at my business and what I want to do online, and what I want my legacy to be from my business.

In these wonderings I have started taking a closer look at some of the products people are offering ~ people who are quite obviously creating a business based on their passions. Businesses that are no where near the internet marketing niche, and I’m getting pretty excited by what I’m seeing. You see, when I see people building a business around their passion, it gives me hope that I can do that too, and it gives me hope that it’s worth teaching people to do it as well.

I thought today, since we’ve been talking about product creation I’d share with you some of the really cool products I’ve seen around the internet in the last couple weeks. (no affiliate links, but some really cool stuff.) Make sure you check out the products ~ how they were created, what they about, how they fit in with the site and the niche. Let your mind start to open up to the possibilities of what this could mean for your business too!

I Ate a Rainbow

If you know me at all you know I think a lot about how to feed kids healthy foods, and especially how to get more healthy foods into school lunches. I came across this site (while connecting with people on twitter) and just love the ideas she’s working with. What a great way to start getting kids to eat more colorful foods.

52 Weeks of Awesome

This next product comes from a couple of ladies who have recently overhauled their site and I’m really enjoying their writing and what they have to offer. I have been particularly interested in what writers are offering and coming up with for products (as I have some plans to move into the writing space with my business). I found they have some great products, and their products (and their site) have given me a lot of inspiration on my journey. They’ve created 52 weeks of awesome to help people find and live the awesome that they are.

Get Organized!

This site is one of my favorite organizing sites. I’m always trying to get more organized (usually with limited success, but I did get some great organizing done this weekend!). Her blog is great ~ always great tips on getting yourself and your life organized ~ but her products are fantastic too. She has created quite a few products ~ in varying price ranges. I myself get the 52 missions and it’s really helpful.

Cooking and Recipes

It seems cooking and recipes are something a lot of people love and love to write about. I’ve got a couple recipe sites myself. I haven’t found them super easy to monetize, however, I did buy this healthy snacks ebook recently and it was really good. We were just having this discussion at the KISS Club over the weekend. I think if you’re going to do a recipe site or food site in general ~ you need to be pretty specific. It needs to be something that people are really into. Because there are so many free recipes online it can be tough to get people to buy recipes online. However, like with this healthy snack ebook ~ I have a LOT of trouble having healthy snacks on hand. I thought about buying this ebook for quite a while. It was a conversation I ended up having on twitter with the author that pushed me over the edge. It has great recipes ~ and shows you how you can mix it up and change the recipes to end up with more than double the ones actually written in the book. That kind of twist on a cookbook is what is going to help it sell. Someone in KISS club mentioned they’d bought quite a few ecookbooks on raw food ~ different aspects of raw food etc. If you’re getting into the cooking/recipe niche ~ you have to be memorable, you have to be unique. So really think about what is unique about you, your site and your content.

Monster Manual ~ and Destuckification

I don’t know if you know Havi and her Duck Selma or not, but if you don’t I highly suggest you check her out. She is the epitome of outside the box. She writes from her heart, in a way I’ve seen no one else do. She has named all her “monsters” (you know the voices inside your head who tell you’re not ________ enough and try to keep you from shining your most excellence), and helps you name and tame them as well. She has created products for business people to let their greatness shine, but she also has products that aren’t related to business at all. She is a masterful business woman and the best example I can share of how to be YOU and crush it.

As you can see… (even though I’m interested in a fairly limited array of topics) there are ways you can create products and income streams doing exactly what it is that you LOVE. So please, I beg you, stop trying to build a blog about internet marketing or sharing your internet marketing journey ~ and write about something you love. I promise there are ways to build income streams and make money from it ~ and I’d be glad to help you figure it all out as you go.

So tell me… if you knew you couldn’t fail, there’d be products to create, and income streams galore, what topic would you build your business on? Can’t wait to hear.

On a recent post I received a comment that got me thinking. I thought I’d address the issue and we could have a discussion about it, because it is definitely a topic that isn’t talked about much and needs to be.

Here’s the comment ~ and it came from the Process of Selling a Product post:

There’s a lot of advice given about producing your own product (course/ebook/ecourse etc) but not enough, I think, about attaining a suitable standard for the product. Printed books have to go through a publishing process with acceptance for publication, editing, copy-editing and proofing etc. It’s great that we can produce our own content now pretty much for free but I think there needs to be some information/guidance somewhere about what constitutes a suitable standard for e-publication.

While I don’t think there will ever be an “online publishing house” that has to approve new products/books that come out, I do believe it is up to each individual product creator to make sure they are putting out quality products.

What makes a quality online product?

This is the million dollar question really. I think it probably depends on the niche you’re in, but here are some things I’ve thought of that I think apply across the board.

1. Actionable information.

No one wants a bunch of fluff that doesn’t really say anything. People generally buy ebooks to get information to solve a problem. Make sure you solve that problem. AND in enough detail that a beginning or someone who doesn’t know as much about the topic can understand and implement.

I think this holds true across the board ~ from internet marketing, dieting, to dog training.

2. Information that makes life easier.

There are those of us who love to “research” to dig around and find all the resources on a topic. There are many many people who do not. There are in fact, people who hate to do that (I know ~ I just can’t understand that at all!). If you can pull resources together so people don’t have to spend time doing it themselves that can be very useful. People will be willing to spend money on that ~ and if you’ve done a quality job they will be glad they did.

Cookbooks ~ link packets, exercise videos, are some examples. Just because people can search it out for free doesn’t mean they want to or will. If you can provide all the information (or a lot of it) in one spot that creates a real quality product people can use.

3. Quality Proofreading and Grammar

I am probably more picky about this than a lot of other people ~ but know there are people like me out there. I get very frustrated when a product uses wrong words ~ (their/there/they’re/then/than) It seriously drives me crazy. Same with missed words in a sentence.

This happens in published paper books as well ~ in fact, I read a book one time that had a mistake on just about every other page ~ so just because you have to go through a publishing house doesn’t necessarily mean this doesn’t happen.

Proofread your work. Seriously. Get someone else to proofread your work. It’s important. You are building your brand here, with every product. Make sure you are sending the message you want to send.

4. Fluff vs. Content

Sometimes it feels like you have to write 150 pages for something to “count”. This is not necessarily true. It is especially not true if you aren’t saying anything. Fluff does not make for happy customers. If you only give 20 pages of actionable information and your book is 100 pages long I’m going to be pissed. My time is precious I don’t have extra time to spend reading stuff that isn’t saying anything.

Get to the point ~ I don’t need all the extraneous information that doesn’t really help what I’m trying to do one way or another. Yes, a short bio at the beginning is ok, but I don’t need your whole life story ~ I don’t need a bunch of stuff that isn’t helping me solve my problem. Really. A 30 page book that’s chock full of actionable content would be appreciated more than a 100 pages that I have to go in and really look for and identify the information that I need.

5. Giving Everything People Need

This happens a lot in internet marketing related products. You’ll buy a product and then the author only tells you half of what you need to know and then expects you to buy yet another product to get the rest of the information. This is just NOT ok. If you say you’re going to provide an answer ~ then you need to provide the answer ~ the whole answer.

Again ~ you’re building your brand here. It’s very important that you create a product that builds your brand, doesn’t tear it down.

6. Promotional Content

The last thing I want to talk about regarding this is the idea of promoting in your paid book. This is a personal decision, of course, but it’s something you need to think about seriously before you make a decision. People have paid you for information or a solution. You need to give them that. It can be nice to provide further recommendations for them at the end of their book ~ and maybe a link to your site in the footer of the book, but a paid product filled with affiliate links can leave a bad taste in someone’s mouth.

I said this in my answer to the original comment and it’s an important point ~ if you create a low quality product people will remember and they will be much less likely to buy from you the next time. This is kind of the “checks and balances” you can’t continually put out bad products and keep making money. So we don’t have a clearing house all products go through, but you can’t put out bad product after bad product and still have people buying. In this time of social media word spreads quickly ~ people will hear about crappy products. People will hear about how great your product is or how bad it is. It’s up to the individual to make sure they are putting together a product that does what it says it will, and accurately depict what it will do in the sales page. Don’t offer something you’re not giving.

So what do you think? How do we as internet marketers create quality products? I’d love to hear your take on it, tell me in the comments.

We’ve been talking about the different kinds of products you can create, and there’s more to be said on that topic, however, today, I’d like to run through the process. The 6 simple steps you’ll need to know to sell your product. I’m not going to go into great detail about each step today because I will be going over each step as we walk through this series. I did want to give an outline though for those of you who are working through this now.

1. Create your product

If it’s an ebook or in pdf format you will probably want to create a zip file out of the product. This may include just the product ~ or you may have a text “read me” file that you want to put in along with it. The read me file can be instructions or hints/tips you might have before they get started. If your product has more than one pdf, or file zipping them together will allow them to be delivered all at once ~ easy.

My computer seems to automatically have a zip program, but if yours doesn’t you can get winzip for free. It will unzip and zip files for you.

2. Sales Page

Once you’ve gotten your product done (or at least enough done that you know exactly what you’re going to offer) you’ll need a sales page.

This is where people start to freak out. Don’t. You don’t have to write a 25 page long sales page. At. All. Short to the point sales pages work well too ~ especially if you already have a relationship with the people you are sending to the page.

A basic sales page will answer 3 questions:

1. What do you have?

2. What’s in it for the buyer? (how does it benefit them to get it)

3. What should they do next?

You can take 500 words to answer those questions or you can take 6000 ~ either way ~ you’re probably still answering the same questions. We’ll get more into the sales page later.

3. Buy button

At the bottom of your sales page you will need a buy button. Something they can click to take them to a place to pay you. You will get the buy button from one of two places ~ your payment processor or your product delivery service.

4. Payment processor:

This is the service that will actually take and process the payment from your customer. This will most likely be Paypal. They are easy to work with, well known, trusted, a great option for taking money online. Paypal buy buttons are fantastic for getting paid for services ~ coaching, anything you’re going to do with a person. You can create your button right in paypal, and then set up an appointment with people once they have paid.

If you’re offering a digital download product or an online product you’ll need a product delivery service of some sort.

5. Product delivery

This is how you get your product into the hands of the person who just bought. Most product delivery services or shopping cart services will also create your buy now button. They generally work with payment processors, so you’ll usually work within your product delivery area to create your buy now buttons.

I personally use e-junkie as my product delivery company. They make everything super easy ~ and they are SUPER cheap (5 bucks a month). They automate and secure the download delivery process as well as integrate with paypal and many other payment processors. They also have shopping carts if you are selling tangible goods (stuff you actually send) that do everything you need done for that process. Good stuff.

There are other, more complicated, more expensive product delivery companies, sure. If you’re doing a membership site you’ll need specific software that will integrate and protect your content, but if you’re doing a basic product, text, audio, video ~ keep it simple.

6. Thank you page

You will need a thank you page to send people to once they’ve paid. This lets them know you have received their payment and tells them how they will receive their purchase. You can do some other things on this page ~ but the basic point is communication ~ thanking them and letting them know what to do next.

The thank you page is generally integrated with your product delivery service.

So there you have it… the basic outline of how you sell a product. You can make this process as simple, or as complicated as you wish. You can add one time offers, you can add people to your list ~ all of these additional elements can be integrated, but when it comes down to it, these 6 things are the basics you need to sell your first product.

As this series continues we’ll be getting into each of these in much more detail… but if you have questions about the general process feel free to ask in the comments.

When I start talking about product creation the same “objections” keep coming up. I thought I would address them.

I don’t have any ideas

This is totally mental issue. There are ideas all around you. You can find product ideas from blog comments, forums, other people’s blogs/blog comments. People are always asking for help ~ or telling you where they are having trouble. They may not come right out and tell you, but if you read between the lines you’ll see the same questions and comments again and again ~ these are things that can be addressed in your product.

What I have to say isn’t important enough

Poppy cock. It’s not about what you’re saying ~ or that you’re saying it. It’s about you filling a need in your market. It’s about you answering a question, providing a solution to your market, your community. If you see people continually asking the same question you can bet there is a need for the answer.

I don’t have enough to say

No one said you have to write a 100 page book. Jimmy Brown does quite well with his 7 – 15 page reports. In fact, you can create an entire information product empire and never write anymore than 15 to 20 pages on any given topic.

If you’d like to learn more about how he does that, his product ~ Small Report Fortunes is great. It is half off right now ~ it’s his latest product to be “retired”. It will no longer be available after October 1st. If you think you might now or ever want to use short reports to build your business I suggest you get it now. (click the “no thanks I have the report” link to get to the small reports page ~ although the free report is very good too!)

Your product can be a checklist, it can be short, it can be long. It’s up to you and what your market needs to explain or clarify whatever it is your product’s about. You may not be able to price a 7 page report at $97 dollars ~ but there is something to be said for lower priced items.

I don’t know how to put it all together!

I get that one. I was petrified of the process the first time I put a product together. I had no idea what pieces I needed, how they fit together or how to make them work. Lucky for you, you’ve got this series and we’re going to go through it all.

I don’t have an audience/community/list/tribe

Well, this makes it a little more difficult ~ however ~ it is never impossible. When I created my first product I had 0 readers on this blog, none, nada, zilch. I still managed to sell quite a few copies. There are ways to sell your product even if you don’t have a community.

The best thing I can tell you is to start taking actions that will build your community NOW, while you’re creating your product so it will be there when it’s ready. Even if you don’t there are still plenty of avenues you can use to sell your product ~ and again ~ we’ll be going over them as well in this series.

If you’ve had any of these thoughts or mental blocks ~ and in your heart you really do want to create your very own product, please don’t let them stop you. You can do it! It just takes a some courage, and taking it one step at a time.

When people think of “creating a product” they will often think they have to write an ebook. And when people think of writing an ebook they often feel something like ” OMG I could never do that”.

Listen… ebooks are not your only option!

In fact, an ebook may well be the wrong option for your first product. Let’s talk about what other possibilities are available.

Create an audio.

Identify a problem or stumbling block in your niche. Find the questions that people are asking (forums are great for this). Then answer the questions.

Tools needed:

A mic ~ I use a very cheap mic from Walmart (have used it for all videos/audios/podcasts on this site)
Recording software ~ I use audacity (it’s free and there are great tutorials online for it)

Do an interview.

For this one you’ll have to find someone who you respect in your niche. It could be your mom or it could be someone online. OR you could have someone you know interview you! Again find questions (check forums/yahoo answers) and have someone ask you related questions that you can answer for people.

Tools needed:

A conference call line ~ I use this free one.

Do a webinar:

Invite people to come to a live webinar (aka phone call) and ask you their questions. Make sure this is a niche you are knowledgeable in so you can actually answer the questions. You could also have people email you their questions and you could call on people to ask them during the call so you have a little more control over the questions. (You could invite a few select people to come ~ it doesn’t have to be open to the public)

Make sure you record the call ~ this will turn into your product.

Tools Needed:

Same free conference call line ~ just make sure you hit the record button when you start

Audacity to do some editing of the recording.

Checklist:

A checklist can be a fantastic first product. There is a process for just about everything! There are many people who love being able to see the process on paper, lined out, able to check things off as they go. It doesn’t matter if you’re coming up with a Squidoo lens creation checklist or a what to take camping so you don’t end up in the woods without toilet paper checklist ~ checklists work. They are very simple to put together ~ especially if you are familiar with the process. Tip: make sure you go through the process with a beginner mind ~ and don’t leave out things that seem “obvious” to you as someone familiar with the process ~ a beginner will need to know those things.

Tools Needed:

Your experience
Open office (for creating the document and pdf)

Instructions:

Similar to a checklist, walk people through the process of doing something. Whether it’s to choose a Halloween dog costume, or baking a raspberry torte ~ instructional products are fantastic. Just make sure there are people out there looking for the instructions you’re going to provide (yep, back to the forums!)

Depending on your topic you can write out your instructions ~ or you could put a video camera on a tripod and video your instructions. Think what will be most appropriate to get your message across and your instructions to be clear.

If you’re doing instructions for something online you can also use screen capture to show the process as you do it on your screen. I use this a lot, in fact, my entire Squidoo Christmas Cash Video Series was done this way.

Tools needed:

for written instructions: open office

For video instructions: a video camera ~ I use the RCA Small Wonder

Online video instructions: Jing (works for both apple and pc)

Use a Great Series from Your Site

If you have a blog related to your topic and have done a great series related to your topic you can pull your blog posts and create an ebook out of them. Mediocre content will NOT work for this. It has to be your best stuff. I know I said we were talking about options other than ebooks ~ but this one you’ve already done the writing, so it doesn’t count.

Pull your posts out. Write an introduction ~ let people know what they’re going to learn. Add content between the posts if necessary ~ or use the posts as “chapters” depending on the topic and what works best for it.

Tools needed:

A great series you’ve written

open office to put it together and create the pdf

PLR Articles/Reports

This one can be touchy. There is good PLR and there is incredibly shitty, shouldn’t be shared with anyone more less sold to someone PLR. If you’re going to go this route you want to make sure you get primo quality PLR. This doesn’t mean you have to pay an arm and a leg ~ you just have to get quality stuff.

You could get a pack of plr articles in your niche ~ do a little rewriting, and put them together into a report much like you would a blog series. You could also get a fully written PLR report related to your niche. I’d probably read through it, make some changes to make it more “my voice” and then create the product.

This can be a VERY easy way to create your first product, but remember ~ it’s PLR. Other people will have bought the same content ~ and depending on how they use it… You want to always keep your integrity and your reputation at the front of your mind. Don’t sell junk just to make a sale.

With that said…

Tools needed:

Great plr ~ I use Easy PLR by Nicole Dean

Open office ~ to create the pdf

Master Resell Rights Products

Master resell rights products are complete products ~ that generally come with a sales page, thank you page, the content and everything else you need to put it up on your server and sell it right away.

This can be a great way to create your first product ~ just remember your reputation and your integrity and don’t sell crap.

Many master resell rights products will NOT come with PLR rights ~ which means you can’t change the actual product itself. If you go this way make SURE you own the product ~ you can change it, edit it, put your name on it, make it yours, do whatever you want with it. Another sales page for the same product a million other people are selling won’t do that well… UNLESS… you have a loyal audience, the product is very related to your niche, and will HELP your community. If that is the case then it won’t be much different than sending them to an affiliate product ~ you’ll just get the entire commission for the sale instead of a percentage.

Tools Needed:

A great Master Resell Rights product ~ I’ve gotten a couple through Daily Niche Ideas but don’t use this method regularly so I don’t have a “go to” source for this type of product ~ you’ll have to search and do some research.

Hosting

Some tech knowledge to put the pieces together

As you can see there are tons and tons of ideas for creating products. When you are deciding what kind of product to create it’s important to take into consideration a couple things.

1. What do you do best? Are you a great talker? Terrible on camera? Terrific writer, but get nervous live? These things are important because if you follow your strengths they will help you create a terrific product that comes more naturally to you.

2. What works best for the content? If you’re trying to explain how to move a website from one hosting company to another words will work ~ but video instructions would probably be even better. Tailor your product to the content, what will work best for it.

If you can pull those two things together you’ll be on the right track. If you’ve got questions, leave them in the comments and I’ll do my best.

If you’re ready to get started on your first product, and would like some help ~ join the KISS Club. We’ll set you up your own space and we’ll do it together, at your pace.

I’m going to say yes. It probably is.

Now don’t panic. This really is something you can do! I promise. Over the next few weeks (or however long it takes) we’re going to walk through the process.

I created my first product in 2008. It was a little ebook that outlined the process I used for keyword research when created adsense sites. The process still works and every so often I still make sales of this ebook. (even though I do nothing to promote it any longer)

My second product was a collaboration with Andrea. A membership site where we walked people through the entire process of One Week Marketing ~ step by step. LearnItStepbyStep.com was born out of an early Saturday morning instant message conversation we were having. The idea was big and it had a life of its own. We contacted PotPieGirl to see if the idea was something she could support. She could and away we went. I wrote all the content and we had the entire site up and running in less than a month ~ was probably more like 2 weeks. It was such a whirlwind though, that I can’t even remember exactly how it happened anymore.

From there I went on to create keyword lists, checklists for Squidoo, niche packets much like Daily Niche Ideas (which are no longer available), as well as all my free reports, the Squidoo Christmas Cash video series, and of course most recently Kiss Club.

In addition to products I have also offered personalized coaching/brainstorming services off an on. These sessions offered my one on one attention and expertise to help people get up and running and taking action. I also provided other services like lens reviews, blog reviews.

My product prices have ranged from $7 to $75/30 minutes, and everything in between.

As you can see there’s no “right” way to do products. There’s no one “right” type of product, no one right price point. There’s only what’s right for you where you are right now. Products and services can be anything, anything at all. Don’t let your head tell you the only product you can do is an ebook sold on clickbank ~ because that just isn’t true.

Your first product may be crap. It will still probably sell. Your second product will be a little better, and it will sell too. As you get more comfortable with the process your products will get better, you will feel more comfortable setting a higher price point, and all the products you’ve done previously can still be bringing in income.

This morning I went and looked at my income sheets. My highest earners so far this year

1. An affiliate program

2. My products and services

3. One of my membership site

These three were all about equal as far as income goes. Affiliate marketing is great. I love it. I still do it. AND…

There’s something about having your own product. Something that you know inside and out. Something you created, you’re invested in, you love. It is so much easier to recommend a product you know everything about (because you created it) and that feeling shines through in the recommendation.

So think about it… is it time for you to create your first (or next) product? The next few weeks we’re going to get into the nitty gritty ~ the hows, whens, whys, HOWs of creating your first product. I hope you’ll play along. If you’re going to play start thinking about the topics you love the most (hopefully you have a website connected to that topic ~ if not no biggie ~ and why not?). Think about the questions people ask about that topic. Think about the websites/products available on the topic already. We’ll be using the answers to these questions next time.

If you haven’t created a product as of yet, I’d love to hear in the comments what’s holding you back from doing it. I’d love to be able to address your concerns and road blocks in this series and help you get your first product finished and on the market by the time this series is over. So tell me what’s going on…

and myself

It’s coming up on the end of the month and for a lot of people the end of the month means there’s a little more month than money. The end of the month is when people get a little panicky and either get depressed and give up or get inspired and get busy!!

Over the last week I’ve had a few resources come to my attention that have really pushed me to take this challenge myself, and to hopefully inspire you to take it as well.

Dave Navarro put out a new free report this week. How to Start Making Real Money with Your Own Products in Only 3 Days. Like Dave’s other freebies and What’s Holding You Back? it is fantastic!

I’m sure when you saw the mention of product creation a ton of “yeah buts” came to mind, in fact, maybe you even thought about not even finishing this post. DON’T. Go right now and download Dave’s new report. Read it. He is a master of walking people through all those yeah buts (myself included) and making them look like silly little thoughts that we were ridiculous to even entertain. Seriously.

He has a multitude of worksheets in this free report to help you work through your “yeah, buts”, no matter what they are ~ no list? no time? no product? no ideas? no body? Yeah, Dave will help you with that.

But that’s not all this report is, it is also a step by step (7 steps to be exact) manual to get your own product started, finished and out there in the world making money in the next 3 days.

No joke. The process is very simple, and you CAN do it.

Don’t get yourself all worked up by the word “product” and start thinking you have to write a million page ebook to have value ~ the knowledge you have is valuable. You just need to share it.

Before Dave’s report came out this week I’d just finished reading Jonathan Leger’s report called “Write That Report“. It is a fantastic little report that will walk you through writing, selling and profiting from a short report. His process is 10 steps, and it doesn’t get much more simple than the way he’s lined it out.

I highly recommend you download Dave’s free report ~ and if for some reason you talk yourself into the fact you can’t do an audio product ~ grab Jonathan’s Write that Report and do a written product. Either way… you owe it to yourself to accept this challenge.

So what’s the challenge?

I challenge YOU (and myself) to put together a simple but valuable product and have it on the market for sale in the next 72 hours.

So… what do you think? Get over your “yeah buts” and do it. It will be the best thing you have done for your business and yourself as a business person yet! Creating a product, having a product that is yours changes everything. It changes the way you look at your business. It changes the way you look at yourself. It adds another income stream to your business. It really is a turning point. Don’t get stuck in the BS… send the kids to a movie with Grandma this weekend, and get busy.

When you get your product done and online ~ come back here and leave a note in the comments section. I’ll definitely want to tweet your awesomeness!

Ready? Set? GO! GO! GO!
