Content Creation Series: Q and A Post

One of my favorite content creation methods is using questions that come directly from my readers and answering them in a post. These kind of posts are fantastic for a couple reasons: you know you’re giving information people want the answers to (because someone actually asked!), and the content is usually pretty easy because it’s something you know and don’t have to research ~ just answer the question.

Setting up a Q and A post:

You can set up a Q and A post any way you want it or any way that fits well with your blog design. I like to use the block quote function in my text editor to block out the question and make it really noticeable. Sometimes though I just use a Q. You can use some code to make the Q bigger or a different color. There’s a good tutorial on how to do that here.

Do I have to credit the reader?

Many times I don’t. I say “a reader asked” or this is a question I get asked frequently. Many times people want to remain anonymous. This allows them to speak up in the comments if they want to identify themselves, but doesn’t embarress them if they didn’t want to be identified to begin with.

What if I don’t have any readers asking questions?

Good question! You may not have readers emailing you or asking your questions at this time ~ but that shouldn’t stop you! You can find questions being asked about your topic in quite a few places. Yahoo answers ~ a whole site devoted to asking questions :) , e-how a whole site devoted to people answering questions ~ simply create a question you can answer from a topic you find there, forums! forums are fantastic places to find questions to answer. If you are a regular and trusted member of the forum (and you are ~ aren’t you?!) you can let them know about the post, or else just answer the question there as well (don’t copy/paste your article though).

More ways to use Q and A content than in blog posts:

Squidoo: you could create an entire lens based on answering questions ~ an FAQ lens of sorts.
This lens could sell things or it could lead back to a site of yours giving you backlinks.

hubpages: EASY way to get a hub done. Find a question relevant to your topic and then write out an answer. You can then link to the site you’re trying to rank in the search engines. (using your targeted anchor text in the link of course)

Wetpaint: Another great place for Q and A content.

Forums: To build your reputation and standing in a forum why not do a whole post answering someones question. Whether you’ve seen it on the forum or somewhere else ~ providing great information with no expectation of return is a great way to build your forum reputation.

You can use Q and A content quite well just about anywhere on the web. It is a great way to build trust and rapport, and if you’re building links it’s one of the easiest ways to create content I know of. If you’re familiar with your topic it’s pretty easy to just answer a question right?

Taking Q and A content one step further

So far we’ve only talked about written content in our content creation series. The next two posts will be discussing more multi media options for your content. Q and A is a great way to get started in multi media. You could do a video answering a question, you could do an audio of you answering a question (and then turn it into a podcast that can be syndicated through itunes ~ but we’ll get to that later). Just remember your content can be taken way beyond the written word ~ and some of you may find audio or video content to be much easier than writing!!

If you have any questions about using questions and answers for content please ask them below and we’ll see what we can come up with! If you’re having trouble coming up with content for your sites we can brainstorm here or at the Facebook fanpage. If you want some one on one time with me shoot me an email[momtohanna[at]]gmail[dot]comĀ  and we’ll work out some coaching time.

Jackie, I think this Q & A thing will work for me. I'm not good at stories, very good at rambling on an on AND on as you have experienced already. :( So I'm going to try it.

Great! I think many people make these mistakes and then complain that nothing is happening.

The Q&A sounds like an awesome opportunity to do what we were discussing in an earlier article.....using video and text in the same post. :)

Love the post. This is helpful for me. I'm using the interview question/answer format in a new project this year. I just began a new feature for which is a vendor spotlight on my Kansas City wedding photography studio blog.

The idea is to introduce my vendors (florists, DJ's, limosines) to potential clients. I figure it will be useful content to help vendors, help my clients, build relationships, build credibility and build links.

Russell ~ the nature of a blog is to have the most current information at the top of your homepage. You can't really change that. You can change how many posts show up on the home page. Go to your settings area (in the left hand side) Pick the "reading" option. You'll see "blog pages show at most" change that number to whatever you want it to be.

I don't know how to interpret that Russell without seeing the words themselves. You should be looking for 3 -4 word keyword phrases for these blog post titles. If you want some one on one help email me and we'll work something out.

Back again, Jackie!

Apart from reader info, is there any linking benefit in linking a topical-to-my-subject EZA Article to one if my posts? If so, how do I do it?

Also, I went to MNF to check on a 2-word keyword for a post. For SOC I got an orange circle with an exclamation mark; a local exact match of 110; a global exact match of a staggering 350,000. I added the word 'tips'; got a green, a local of 16, and a global of 947,000. What should I interpret from this?

RUSSELL

Hi Jackie

You may have covered this already. If so, I've not been able to find where.
I've now posted my second Post to my Blog and about to post the third. I notice that when I go to my URL site it shows No 2 post followed by No 1. Presumably No 3 will appear before No 2, and so on. Is there a way to show only the latest post with the earlier posts listed out in the R/H side column?
And will you be covering how to put in, and use, an opt-in box and list building soon?
And also the use of widgets?
Regards
RUSSELL

Brilliant Jackie!

Off topic have you covered anything about adding Youtube videos to our sites? I'm stuck on that one.

Thanks again

That will be the post tomorrow. :) Stay tuned.

Slightly off topic here, Jackie but I can't help but notice what a great response your "Who is Jackie Lee" post got. I always tick the "notify me of followup comments via e-mail" box so I can follow the conversation for a few days (I untick when I think most of the action is over) and have been struck by the extra responses coming in. People have really loved that post.

This confirms what you're saying about people really responding to a blogger/marketer that is genuine - someone ready to show the real them.

Jackie, thank you for giving me some fresh ideas about answering questions... and even finding questions to answer... very clever!

Fran :)

Good morning, Jackie. When you have time could you back up to discussing plugins? My stat counter and related posts plugins are not working. My footer code doesn't say "body" anywhere for me to insert what I need to. And I can't figure out how to make a text widget go to the location in the sidebar where I want it to go. I know I'm getting some visitors because I have a couple of retweets and comments. If you won't have time to get to this now, could you point me to another (free) source? Thanks so much!

if you don't have the 'body' tag in your footer, go to appearance (in the left hand side) and then choose widgets. You'll have a bunch of options there. click and hold down the text widget and drag it over to the sidebar you want it in. Drop it there. You can then open it and put your code there. You can drag and drop it into the order you want it to go in. (remember you won't see anything on your actual blog for that widget though)

as far as the related posts ~ go back into the settings area and change the number in the related post plugin settings. I have mine set at 3 right now so it can be a little more lenient with relatedness ~ that usually helps things show up.

Another good post Jackie Lee, thanks
