Content Creation Series: Quick Tip

2010 January 11
by Jackie

While we want our posts to be quality and a minimum of 300 words is best, there will be days when you are slammed for time and still want to put a post on your blog. This is the perfect kind of day for a quick tip post.

Quick Tip Post

What is a quick tip post. It’s just what it sounds like. You find a quick tip in your niche and share it with your readers. You can provide a little detail or you can just give the tip. It’s up to you.

Where do I find a quick tip?

You can find quick tips in many different places.  Yahoo answers is a great place ~ look in the answers people leave to questions ~ you’re likely to find a quick tip there. Another great place to look for quick tips is E-how ~ if you search for an article in your niche then look at the “tips and warning” section at the bottom of the article. You are likely to find things that will work well as quick tips.

Here’s an article I wrote about How to Make Photo Business Cards. You will see that in the warning section the last warning would be a great quick tip:

Don’t submit your photo business card template without proofreading. You can not undo that step and will get a whole set of cards printed exactly as the template was submitted ~ mistakes and all.

Now I wrote that so I can copy it ~ but if you were looking for a quick tip you’d want to make sure you reworded it into your own words.

How to Write a quick tip:

Give people a little information about what you’re discussing, and then give them the tip. This post doesn’t have to be super long, and still gives good information.

Here’s an example:

Using RSS feeds in Squidoo

Using your RSS feed in related Squidoo lenses is a gret way to get more traffic to your blog. Poeple will see your related information and click through. But what if all your blog content isn’t relevant to the lens you’re doing? If you’ve got a category of completely relevant content you can use the RSS feed for that category.

Quick Tip:

Each category in your blog has its own unique RSS feed.

You can find the RSS feed by clicking on the category you want to use and then clicking the orange RSS icon in the address bar (if you’re using FireFox). That will give you the RSS address for that particular category. It’s a great way to filter out the information that is completely relevant to the lens. :)

I recently started an online content creation lens at Squidoo. I wanted to be able to link back to the blog posts on content creation here (the lens purpose), but I also wanted an easy way for people to see more of what was available and click through to y blog  so I added the RSS feed for the content creation category.

If you want to use only parts of your blog on a lens try checking out the category RSS feed! Works like a charm

What do you think?

It’s a quick easy post to write. It’s not super long, but provides great information.  Make sure you brainstorm some quick tip ideas for the days you’ve got a lot going on so you can still make a post real quick. You don’t want all your posts to be these short quick tips posts, but if you’re in a jam for time they work great.

If you’ve got questions please ask them in the comments. I’ll do what I can to help.

PS. If you’ve had trouble getting into the fan page please try again. I think I fixed the problem.

Yay! I joined the fan page! :)

As far as content creation, I got linked up to an interesting video today that showed how to use Amazon.com reviews for ideas in writing your content. My first thought was, ‘Shoot, Jackie showed me how to do that months ago!’

Great idea. We all have day like that and to know that you can get something up quickly AND that it is going to be helpful, takes the pressure off.

Yes, I struggled with the fan page too. Will return and give it another shot! :)

Another great idea Jackie. I have been toying with it for a few weeks now but never got so far as to do it. My niche is sooo suited for these kind of posts! Can it be that I am really so lazy sometimes when I have so much great content lying around in the house in the form of magazines and also in my head from personal experience in this niche…

I was able to join the fanpage last night and already took part in the discussion on how many links is too many.

    hi jackie,

I think its a great post. Good tip for those who are busy with their lives but still want to commit to posting on their blog.

It’s good for posting on twitter too (hint, hint :) )

With Google Caffeine getting launched, twitter will be a main part of the engine.

Quick tips make for awesome and very well received little posts.

The trick: If you’re sitting at your computer when the thought strokes, STOP, enter your blog and write the tip post. Publish it right there and then or draft it for the next post if you already have one running.

Too many bloggers make the mistake of “saving” them until they have enough quick tips to make a full article.

The cool thing about this option, is you now have several quick tip posts, which you can then put together into one nice article. ;)

Hi Jackie … this query is not quite related to this Post.
You’ll be aware that I’ve been having problems with widgets on my selected Blog theme site.
When I go to “widgets” on my wp dashboard all I get is:

    “Widgets
    No Sidebars Defined

The theme you are currently using isn’t widget-aware, meaning that it has no sidebars that you are able to change. For information on making your theme widget-aware, please follow these instructions.”

If I click on “follow these instructions” I get a heading of “Widgetizing Themes” followed by a lot of info relating to html which I do not understand.
My selected theme does have both L/H & R/H sidebars.
Can you help me from here? (If you wish to sight my theme, please let me know).

And this may sound a silly question, but can I get my theme up to full-size from my dashboard page so I can work on it for widgets? Or don’t I need to?
    Looking forward to your reply

What that means is you can not change the sidebar elements in that theme. You’ll need to look for a new theme ~ make sure the theme is “widget ready”
