Doing Business the FlyLady Way

Today I was happily going about my weekly Home Blessing ~ ala [tag-tec]FlyLady[/tag-tec]. While I was whisking from task to task with my timer set for 10 minutes I thought about how could I effectively use this tool in my business.

That got me thinking about tasks in business that seem so overwhelming so we just don’t start at all. You know the big things like social bookmarking, linkbuilding, setting up a newsletter or ezine, building a network at social networking sites like blogcatalog and stumbleupon.

All of these things can help our business grow and gain our blogs or websites exposure. So just how could I make this work. I would definitely need an internet marketing strategy.

If I was going to choose 4 places to spend time on each week what would they be?

I look at my traffic stats and see I am already getting traffic from blogcatalog, stumbleupon, other blogs I comment on, and forums I’m active on. I already spend quite a bit of time in forums and commenting on blogs, but I don’t spend any real time at blogcatalof or stumbleupon.

Blogcatalog has some excellent new features making it more interactive and a real web 2.0 platform. I think that would be a wise investment. I also realized recently StumbleUpon is more of a web 2.0 community than I realized, when I get traffic from there, it is a lot of traffic so it would be a wise place to invest some time. The other thing I think would be great to do ~ as it is boring and overwhelming is work on adding my sites to directories. The other thing that is time consuming and boring is social bookmarking.

I know flylady does 10 minute increments, but I’m going to up it to 15. Each 15 minutes is its own 15 minute marketing boogie. So here’s how it’s going to work.

My weekly Business Blessing. This could also be blog blessing, website blessing ~ but I think that by promoting my sites and myself I am blessing my business, so I’m going to stick with business.

  1. Set the timer for 15 minutes.
  2. Go to blog catalog ~ search for your niche.
  3. Quickly check out blogs in your niche and join their neighborhood if you like the blog. (if you really like it save it to subscribe to the RSS feed on your google homepage so you can comment there later) See how many cool blog neighborhoods you can join before the timer dings.
  4. Ding ~ Set the timer for another 15 minutes
  5. Go to StumbleUpon and search for other people interested in your niche or keyword area.
  6. Quickly look through people that come up in that search. Look for amount of stumbling they do, most recent activity, and the kind of things they like. If they have stumbled a lot, have a lot of fans and seem to be interested in the same things you are, add them as a friend and go on. Try to find as many interesting stumbling friends as you can before the timer dings.
  7. Ding ~ Set the timer for another 15 minutes.
  8. Choose you most recent blogpost/squidoo lens and book mark it to as many sites as you can before the timer dings. (if you need some additional bookmarking sites besides social marker check my free easy social bookmarking report.)
  9. Ding ~ set timer for another 15 minutes.
  10. Choose your most recent blogpost/squidoo lens and add it to as many directories as you can before the timer dings. (to quickly manage this task use Directory submitter)

That’s it. Your one hour weekly Business Blessing. I am amazed at what can be done in a 15 minute marketing boogie. It’s interesting how the tick tock of a timer can really get you motivated. I have run up and down stairs getting my home blessing done in the alloted time. It’s not like there’s anyone here to see I didn’t get it done in ten minutes, but it presents a challenge. It is also an effective anti dawdling/getting distracted mechanism, which makes me truly believe it will be effective in my online business as well.

What internet marketing tasks do you think would be effectively used with a 15 minute marketing boogie? Let me know in the comments section and if you decide to add the weekly business blessing to your marketing arsenal please stop by and let me know how it goes!!

What a fantastic idea! That timer would help stay focused and be much more productive! Time can really get away from you while online….and focus can be tough to come by on some days.

Thanks for the great tip =)

Great ideas, I was wondering how I could adapt this for affiliate marketing. Excellent ideas!

    Thanks

  3. That’s a very good marketing plan, effective too. For me, I think a 15 minute “marketing boogie” would be finding niches — how many keyword lists for my adwords campaign can I come up with in 15 minutes — quite a few. How many related affiliate offers for a niche can I find on Commission Junction, ClickBank or even Amazon in 15 minutes? More than one would first think.

Working against the timer is something that I do a lot when it comes to brainstorming — it’s easy to get locked away in a whirlwind brainstorming session…and not take any action. Having a timer helps my brain actually get “in the zone” and then get back out of it.

    Just my two cents.
