Forwarding Nameservers and Installing WordPress

I hope you were able to choose a domain name for your site. If you’ve chosen a domain you can go ahead and grab it. If you haven’t bought your domain name yet here’s a link to get a .com for $7.49

Today we’re going to look at what to do next after you’ve bought your domain name.  These steps will always be the same, no matter what kind of blog you’re building. I’ve done tutorials on most of this already so I’ll just point you there so you can take some action!

Today’s Action Steps:

1. Forward your nameservers. This is done from the place you bought your domain and will point it at your hosting account so people will be able to see it. (click the link and scroll down to the nameserver part ~ the first video)

2. If you already have a hosting account and a domain on it you will need to do an add on domain for your new one. This is done at your hosting. (click the link and scroll past the nameserver directions)

3. Install wordpress on your new domain.

4. Change wordpress settings. You’ll want to optimize your blog ~ which is not nearly as complicated as it sounds. You’ll just need to change a couple settings in your dashboard.

That’s it for today. Those are some pretty specific actions you can take, so TAKE ‘EM! If you don’t want to do this part, or don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself I’ll be happy to do it for you.

Remember, the only way you fail is if you don’t take action, or you quit. If you’re stuck at any point in this process please let me know and we’ll see what we can do to get your past the hump. I will say the one thing that many of you could probably do is STOP worrying about what comes next, or next after that. Do what needs to be done NOW, focus on the task at hand ~ there’ll be plenty of time to worry about the rest later. If you contuinually worry about what’s coming you’re not going to get anything done, and you’ll find yourself 6 months from now still worrying about what’s coming with nothing to show for your time.

So far here’s what we’ve covered:

1. Think of a blog topic.
2. Identify your target market
3. Create a  content plan
4. Choose a domain name

None of these include creating products, or setting up an autoresponder or even worrying about a theme. One step at a time. :)

You can do it. I know you can. :)

I recently switched my hosting and now find that the new one automatically both installs (on C Panel, but similar) WordPress, as well as upgrades it whenever a new version appears. To think my old one I had to do everything manually, and I sure wish I’d found a guide like yours when I started out.

    • Sue Ellen from Anti Snoring Device says:

@bruce – that would be a neat feature, having your host automatically upgrade each time there has been a revision in WP, but what effect does it have on your plugins, as wouldn’t they all have to be compatible with the upgrade? I see instances of plugin failures if you don’t monitor the WP upgrades…

I don’t know of any hosting company that upgrades for you… I think he may have meant it provides him the means to upgrade, just clicking the button. There are some hosting companies that don’t have cpanel… and don’t have easy install/upgrade of wordpress. I think he was coming from one of those situations. (but I could be totally wrong).
I think you’d be asking for trouble if your hosting automatically upgraded your wordpress ~ upgrading without turning off your plugins can result in a terrible mess.

        • Bruce says:

The Host is Dreamhost. I have many WP sites on it, and they all upgrade automatically. Prior to doing the upgrade, the complete site is backed up & the backup placed in your files. However, I have never had a failure, so have never needed the backup.

This only happens if you use their one click install for WP…
          From Dreamhost’s panel…
Unless you choose our “Simple Installation” mode (only supported by some apps), you are responsible for upgrading your old installations should any critical security holes be discovered!

    Great write up Jackie!

I wish I would’ve had a step-by-step tutorial to guide me through this process when starting out. I figured it out on my own with persistence but many folks would’ve given up altogether.

There are a lot of newbies out there scratching there heads wondering how to complete this part of the website creation process. I’ll definitely recommend folks here in the future.

Choosing the right or attractive domain name is one of the most important keys and crucial part of creating your own website brand. Attractive domain name and substantial contents will draw much visitors to your websites. In my case I attached my name, “remco” with the keywords “workwith” to give my website a unique and professional brand. But it’s your choice whether you want your domain purely keywords or keywords with your company name or your name.

Thanks so much Jackie, I held off on the theme part as it is not in this blog post and you are adamant about having us not “jump the gun”, which is fabulous advice.
