I have many WP sites on it, and they all upgrade automatically. Prior to doing the upgrade, the complete site is backed up & the backup placed in your files. However, I have never had a failure, so have never needed the backup. This only happens if you use their one click install for WP... From Dreamhost's panel... Unless you choose our "Simple Installation" mode (only supported by some apps), you are responsible for upgrading your old installations should any critical security holes be discovered! I think he may have meant it provides him the means to upgrade, just clicking the button. There are some hosting companies that don't have cpanel... and don't have easy install/upgrade of wordpress. I think he was coming from one of those situations. (but I could be totally wrong). I think you'd be asking for trouble if your hosting automatically upgraded your wordpress ~ upgrading without turning off your plugins can result in a terrible mess.
