Free Blog Templates ~ Make Your Site Your Own

Aug 05

As you know I have been building these keyword sniper sites. My favorite part of the process is finding free blog templates. Choosing a blog template or theme that fits your site content is an important part of the process.

For me, content is number one, but the feel of my sites is definitely a close second. The feeling of your sites makes people feel welcome, and want to look around a little more. So I try to make the theme of my site match the feeling of the content. I would never just use the Keyword sniper theme for a baby related site ~ it just doesn’t match. However, I have no problem using the keyword sniper theme for a site that’s not so “soft”, like tools or marketing info etc.

You can find free blog templates, especially for wordpress.org all over the place. Tons of sites will come up if you just google free blog theme. You can use any theme you want, but if you want to increase your search engine optimization and your chances of being found my the search engines I suggest you use a free blog template from CourtneyTuttle.com.

Court has gone through each of these themes and cleaned up the code and made sure everything is completely optimized for the search engines. He has over 60 templates available, so you can almost always find something that will fit with your site.

If you want to have an original theme for your site you can always find one that has a graphical header and change out the header image. This will make the theme original to your site.

One of my favorite of Court’s free blog templates I do this with is the I love Music theme.

Here’s how the original I love music theme looks:

It’s a nice looking template ~ but look what I turned it into.

It’s totally different and completely unique to this site.

I know a lot of people want a custom theme, but using a nicely SEOed template with a customized graphical header can do just as well. This is a great way to save some money as you are getting started, and will still give you a nice original looking free blog template.

  3. Hi Jackie,
You always pack your posts with great and helpful info. Thanks : )
Question: I really like the WP theme you used, but it is no longer on courneytuttle.com, either that or I simply can’t find it. I would love to get access to that theme, I love how simple it is, and it looks great on your site. Any ideas on how I can get hold of it?
    thanks

    Hey Emma,

    Great question!!

Once you have created the image you need to save it with the same name as the current header image. (which is generally header.jpg) You can find this in your hosting area under public.html ~ wp content ~ themes, You should see a folder that says images. This is where your header image will be. Delete the current header image, and then upload the new one. Make sure it is the SAME EXACT NAME. If it uploads with an extra jpg at the end you can click on it and on the right hand side will be a link that says rename file, then just rename it exactly the same as the old header file.

This should do it. It may take a little refreshing for you to be able to see the new header image.

    Hope this helps!!

  7. But how do you do that? I mean change the picture?

  8. Another great tip- thanks. I know that I struggle with wanting the site to look PERFECT but that can be fixed later.. but picking a high quality theme like this, adding a relevant header, and then putting content first- you really can’t go wrong.

I liked seeing how you customized the header the most- I’m going to think about this more for future projects.
