I was having a conversation with a friend over the weekend and we started talking about [tag-tec]making money with squidoo[/tag-tec]. She said I don’t think you look at squidoo the same way I do.  So I asked her ” how do you see squidoo?”

Her answer was very interesting and a complete surprise, because it was completely different than how I see squidoo.

I have been primarily using squidoo for driving traffic to my other sites and for affiliate marketing.  In other words I am making money from places other than squidoo.  Yes, I generally receive a monthly payout from squidoo for my on page sales and my portion of the adsense revenue, but it is not generally much and I hadn’t really given it much thought.  Since my focus is traffic outside of squidoo I have never really worried or thought much about my lensrank inside squidoo.

This friend of mine has taken a completely different stance and showed me why she does this. And it makes sense!

As you probably know, Squidoo shares a portion of the adsense profits with all lensmasters.  The percentage or portion you are paid seems to be directly related to the lensrank of your lenses.  It is broken down into tiers, and from what I can tell there are 5 tiers. Each tier recieves a specific payout per lens.  This is not officially told by squidoo, but some lensmasters have gotten together and done some research.

Here’s the quick basics though, these numbers keep changing (moving upward) as the months go on. These numbers are for March payouts.

March 2008 Squidoo Payouts are the first earnings for 2008 and represent money earned by the Lensmasters in January.

There now appears to be 5 distinct Squidoo payout levels.

The cut off appears to have roughly been the following:

Tier1 : Below approximately 2,000
Tier2: LR Between 2,000 and 10,000 (Approx.)
Tier3: LR Between 10,000 and 50,000 (Approx.)

Payout Levels:

Tier 1 : $8.77
Tier 2 : $1.49
Tier 3 : $0.08
Tier 4 : $0.01
Tier 5 : $0.00

Are you seeing where my friend is going?

She has set a goal to build 2 quality lenses a day. The higher she can get ranked the better. If she can get some tier 1 ranked lenses she will get almost 9 dollars apiece each month.  As I mentioned these tier payouts are only increasing the longer squidoo is around and the more people start using it.  So one day ~ in the possible near future we could be looking at a 10 dollar payout for tier 1 lenses, and who knows maybe a 5 dollar payout for tier 2.

If you have 100 tier 2 lenses you’re talking about 500 dollars a month right there.  Just for tier 2.

I definitely began to see where her theory would pay off. I think it is a pretty sound strategy. I think if you are building lenses that are of good enough quality to become tier 1 or 2 you are probably going to be making some affiliate sales as well.

I think you are still going to have to choose your KEYWORDS well for your lenses. It appears that traffic is still a major contributor towards lensrank, so if your lenses are not getting indexed and you are not getting organic traffic from google I think you are going to have a hard time getting into the top 2 tiers.  (although maybe I’ll change my story once I finish the 30 day challenge!)

OK, back to squidoo.

There are a couple things that worry me about this strategy.

1. Being able to stay committed and focused enough to build 2 lenses every day, or even one for that matter. However, I imagine even if you build it slow you will get there.  I think now is a perfect time to be doing this, actually positioning yourself at the front of the wave. There are lots of people using squidoo now ~ but there are TONS of people who have still never heard of it. I imagine someday soon it will be a household name, so stake your claim and grab  your urls now.

2. Putting all your eggs in one basket.  As much as I believe in squidoo it makes me a little nervous to put everything I have into one thing. What if for some crazy reason squidoo got erased. Everything you have online would disappear. That’s a bit scary.  I’m quite sure it’s worth the risk, I would just diversify and have at least one other way to make money online. Whether you are building hubpages (which I have not done) or build a blog. I would have something else that you can take with you in case of tragedy at Squidoo.

So for those of you looking to work hard for the long term payout I would highly suggest you start building squidoo lenses.  The lenses you build today, with a little effort can still be paying you for years to come.  The best part? You can do it all for free!
