How to Start and Use Your Blog

I’ve been getting quite a few questions about how to work better/quicker/faster/easier with a blog. I thought I’d cover a few tips and tricks about blogs today. If you have any questions I haven’t covered please ask them in them in the comments section ~ that way this will be a great place you can come back and reference for blog related questions. :)

So here we go.

Where can I build a blog?

I know I recommend blogger, but there are lots of places you can build a blog very easily for free. Each has their own way of doing things, but they will all work.  Here’s a few options you can choose from ~ if you want more options google free blog platform.

Tumblr Probably one of the MOST simple ways to get started ~ very straight forward, fill in your name and email address kind of simple.

LiveJournal ~ This is a very community oriented site so do not create a “spammy” type blog here, you really need to create a blog that has some good content here.

Blog.com ~ this one is very similar to blogger.

tblog.com ~ Another free blogging platform, with plenty of control over your blog

Here’s the deal ~ right now you can start a blog at blogger, but at some point in the future, when things start getting bigger you’re going to want to create a “network” of your own sites across a variety of platforms so you will always have some place to link from.  Don’t let that overwhelm you, just know there are more places out there than blogger to start a blog.

How do I start at Blogger?

Blogger was recently taken over by Google. Now all you have to do to get started at blogger is put your GMAIL address AND PASSWORD in the sign in area ~ this will get you started. Remember, it’s your gmail address and your gmail password now. Once you get logged in it will walk you through the steps. Here’s a video on how to start a blogger blog.

Here’s the video in text:

1. Enter your gmail email address and password.

2. Choose a username for your blogger account. (doesn’t matter what it is)

3. Choose a url and name for your blog (something general)

4. Choose a template for your blog (doesn’t matter ~ just pick one)

5. Start blogging

Why am I building a blog?

For our purpose today your blog is a place to be able to create links back to your “money” sites. This blog is going to be part of your “linking network” someday ~ we are not expecting traffic to this blog. It doesn’t need to be beautiful. It doesn’t need to be fancy. In other words DO NOT OBSESS over this blog. We’ll make a blog soon that you can obsess over, but for right now this one ain’t it.

What do I title my blog?

Whenever you make a blog you will be asked for 2 things, the url and the title. I suggest for these linking blogs you create something very general. If you know you have a propensity to promote kitchen stuff ~ hey do a kitchen related blog. If you are promoting products feel free to do a “deal” or “gift” type blog. What your url is and what you name it is really NOT that important right now ~ just pick something and put it in.  I choose general themes for my blogs because then it’s easier for me to have a wider variety of relevant things I can link to from that blog.

For example I love to cook. I also promote a lot of family related stuff, cooking, kids, etc. I could set up a kitchen or cooking related blog and all of those things would be appropriate to link to from there.

For the random products I promote for holidays I have created a few deal blogs and holiday blogs. Deal blogs are just a place you can tell people about a great deal you found on an item ~ they’re perfect for product promotion because part of looking for a good product to promote is finding one there’s a savings on.

So you see the topic/url/name is not all that important, what’s important is what you put ON your blog.

What do I write in my blog?

You can write whatever you want ~ did you hear me? You can write whatever you want! This is YOUR space. You can do it any way you want. You can write anything you want. I suggest you write it in your own words, but other than that ~ it’s open.

Here’s some ideas:

You can share stories ~ and link to a product in the story.

You can write a review of the product ~ and link to the product

You can talk about a specific feature you like ~ and link to the product

You can talk about a reason you would use the item ~ and link to the product

You can give a great recipe ~ and link to the product (if it’s relevant)

You can do a tutorial on something ~ and link to a product

You can make a list ~ and link to a product

You can state an opinion ~ and link to the product

As you can see there is a million things to write, and what’s really important is that you link to the product. When you’re linking to the product make sure you use the keywords for your anchor text. That’s why we’re doing this blog.  You see it’s not the content that is super important ~ remember we’re not really expecting people to read this bad boy ~ it’s the LINK that we’re looking for.

Here’s a quick video where I create a blog post from scratch:

Now ~ this DOES NOT mean you can just go in and create a keyword anchor text link and call it a post ~ NOPE. This is a blog ~ it is part of a community, and Google is expecting some content.

If you just do links in your posts you will probably get your blog closed for being spam.

Google will not like it because it’s spam.

Remember ~ blogs are short for web log or in other words, journal, online diary ~ think of it that way and you’ll be fine.

A whole other way to look at it:

If you don’t want to create the content for your blog there is a way you can still do this ~ and it won’t cost you anything. You have to use a wordpress (you host) or a blogger blog. Unique article wizard provides a service where they will publish articles on your blog. Yes, all the articles will have links to other people’s stuff in them ~ you don’t really care about that.

What you get is free content filling up your blog.

What you also get is a SIDEBAR to put your links in.

This blog will keep growing, and you will have new, fresh content and you can easily put your links in the sidebar of the blog.

If you decide to do this make sure you limit the kinds of posts that come to your blog. You can choose categories etc. It’s best if your articles are all on relevant topics, then your links will be relevant as well.

If you want more information on this let me know and I’ll do a whole tutorial on it. If you want to look yourself go to Unique article wizard. Go to the bottom of the page and look for the “blogger login” link. You can create an account from there. Once you get to dashboard there will be a link to learn how to set up your blogspot blog (that’s blogger) read that and check it out.

How do I effectively use this blog?

1. Create posts pointing back to any lenses/sites you make. Here’s an example of one of my posts from a linking blog:

As you can see this doesn’t have to be tough ~ it doesn’t have to be complicated. Just make something up. I didn’t go study something somewhere to make up this post ~ I just made it up. I have a dog. I have a new sofa and I have a BUNCH of dog hair on it. Make something up that is relevant and then add a link. It really is that simple. Don’t let the blog get in your way. It’s just a place to build one more link from. Really ~ that’s it. Just a place to build a link. So don’t let the idea of having a blog get you overwhelmed and in panic mode. Ok??

2. Create links pointing back to your sites/lenses in the sidebar. Here’s an example of some (old) links in my sidebar:

3. Use the RSS feed for your blog in your lenses.

4. Submit your RSS feed to RSS directories to give your blog some links pointing to it. (the more links you have pointing to your blog the more your links pointing to other things will count as well)

I think I’ve covered most of the questions I get about blogging, but if I’ve missed your question feel free to ask it in the comment section below. I’ll be glad to answer it, and do a video if that better illustrates the answer. :) Now go out there and get blogging.

Hi Jackie,

Yet another great post from you, I really look forward to your posts as the content is readable and relevant. You efforts are very much appreciated by me. Thank you.

Tony

Hi Jackie,

I just bought your Squidoo Videos and I am so pleased, I am looking forward to working through them starting tomorrow morning. Also, many thanks for the lovely tutorial on how to start and use a blog, I appreciate all your good work. Your integrity makes all of this such a delight.

All the best,
John

Oh thanks John! I'm glad you're finding them helpful!

Hi Jackie,
Nice tutorial this. In fact, the more I read your blog posts the more I view you as a personal mentor and subscribing to your blog has been the best thing for me of late.Keep up to good work. The mommies and the would-be-mommies are looking up to you as their friend, philosopher and guide.

Hi Jackie! Great video! And I am glad that you featured Blogger. I have Wordpress blogs and Blogger blogs. Though I like the professional feel and look of Wordpress, Blogger is less of a headache. It's so easy to use for newbies. I also have tumblr and this is the most FUN platform for me.

Jackie, this tutorial is awesome! I know I will be doing this as soon as I have a blog and maybe some lenses. Lenses are a total mystery to me, but I saw you have a tutorial on lenses and I am going to read up on how to get started on those. But first, my blog (I think)

Glad you found it helpful ~ for what you're doing you'll want to start a blog first ~ make sure you come back to kiss club and we can work out the details.

i AM LEARNING A LOT FROM YOU
THANK YOU FOR YOU JOB

Ha! I have 2 blogs using Blogger as my platform and I still learned something from this post! You are something special! Thanks!

Thank you so much Jackie for these wonderful videos. I'm just now going over them and the information. Hopefully I will be able to get things going. I'm having difficulty with backlinks, etc. for my blog.

I have a Squidoo question, Jackie. I have found a way to help me make my lenses more quickly, and it involves using somewhat of a template I made in notepad. I'm a little worried that this will get me locked, because I am putting up 3 - 5 lenses per week.
The majority of my lenses are for one product. Do you think this is OK? I'm wondering if this is frowned upon by the Squidoo team. I sure don't want to do anything wrong. At the same time, I don't want to make epic lenses that go on for days. Know what I mean?

are you making lenses that are targeting different keywords? Not sure why you'd build so many lenses for one product?

My lenses aren't days long ~ and as long as you are providing some helpful information ~ features/benefits/reviews whatever ~ you should be fine.

As long as you're not doing lenses on topics that are on the no no list. The only thing that will really get your locked is doing lenses on the squidno list.

Remember though, it's the linking that gets results not so much building tons of lenses quickly.

I said that wrong, I meant one product per lens. Such as my sig for today is for a garbage disposal. Each lens is for a diff product. Didn't even know there was a no no list. Im a rated G kind of gal, if that's what you mean, jellybean.

that's exactly what the squidoo christmas cash teaches ~ yeah that's fine. Here's the don't list:

Hi Jackie,

If we use our keywords several times in our blog post, should we link to it each time or would that make Google think it's spam.

Also, if not, do you recommend the first time our kw is mentioned, or the last?

My post is a bit longer, so I mention it several times. Perhaps I should change the post?

Once is enough. It doesn't matter which one you use. Just link one of them to your lens.

hello
Is it possible to have an affiliate marketing blog that is free, and still earns you money?
Joe

It is, but it's dangerous. You're building your business on a platform you don't own ~ which can be deleted at the whim of the people who do own it.

Jackie,

Do you know if any of these sites are against multiple accounts? I plan on using them for promotion outside of my Christmas lenses as well and was looking to do blogs specific to each promotion in order to have those blogs highly targeted to each site I'm promoting.

I read the terms of service and I want to say multiple accounts are okay, but there is are a couple of terms identified that make me have to ask the question.

Thanks.

JO

you'll have to read the TOS for each site ~ I don't without reading them myself. :)

Unique Article Wizard

It is a service that submits articles to article directories for you. It also has a way you can use it to add content to your blogger blog.

Jackie,

Just a word of warning with regard to UAW. I had two Blogger blogs removed by Google as they were deemed to be spammy even though the UAW categories selected were very relevant to the blog titles.

yeah, they are getting tougher and tougher about it. I had a couple deleted too, although I don't think they were even UAW content. Just do your best to create it as a quality blog and using a free platform ~ you run the risk of getting your stuff deleted. It's part of it. :(

Hi Jackie
Didn't quite know where to put this query but here seemed as good a place as any!
I've done it before, but seem to have forgotten how. Please tell me how to put a You Tube video into my blog. (I know you've done a Post on this sometime before, but I can't find it!).
Thanks. Regards ... RUSSELL

find the embed code for the video you want. highlight and copy it.

Go to your blog ~ make sure you click the "html" option at the top.

Paste the code where you want it in your post.

Click back to visual to see it (although the actual video won't show up unless you look at the preview or post)

Check in your dashboard under settings, check the read area and see if you've for some reason got it set so it has chosen a specific post to show for the front page. That may be the problem. :)

I have a blog that is hosted on hostgator and it is stuck on the entry I posted on June 1st. New entries show up in the archieved files but the page it opens to is still the June 1st entry. Got any ideas whats wrong.

Thanks,
Sylvia

Good article Jackie. One thing I do with my blog is buy a domain name for my blog from godaddy. The domain name is key word for what I am promoting.

Blogger provides an easy way to use godaddy and transfer your domain name to blogger. An example is the link to my web site.

Hi, Jackie? How about hosting my own blog? I just launched mine and am wondering how can I rank first for my keyword. Is it just the same for Squidoo lenses? Can you give this newbie of a webmaster a few tips? Thanks!

Go up to the articles page and check out the sections on how to build a niche blog and how to build an authority blog. The niche blog section will show you how to work on setting up your blog with good seo and how to rank for your keywords. :)

Tumblr is a fine place to create links. The links in your posts are dofollow so they carry weight, which makes it a great place to create a free blog.

wordpress.com ~ not so much. Unless you are creating a blog for personal reasons, not planning to make any money with it, and not using it to link to another site I would stay away from wordpress.com. They have rules in their TOS expressingly forbidding all those activities, and WILL delete your blog without warning.

http://internetmarketingformommies.com/wordpressco...

Thanks Jackie, I didn't know that about Wordpress.com. I guess they haven't found my blogs yet! Mind you I haven't used them in a big way, it's been very understated, but I have used them for back links.

That's great to know about Tumblr. I don't often see them come up in search engine rankings so I didn't know how much weight they would have.

I mentioned the ScribeFire extension in my previous comment, I just noticed that they interface with Zemanta now, and they have some social bookmarking tools to let you bookmark a page from the ScribeFire window, which opens in the lower half of the browser.
.-= Donna@Healthy Vegetarian Recipes´s last blog ..Raw Vegan Chocolate Mousse =-.

I am pretty sure I've tried scribefire before. I may have to look at it again. I'm such a creature of habit ~ I find it hard to change tools. lol.

Haha, me too!

I find it really great to use when I am writing an article in response to an article on someone else's site. Because I can see their article while I'm writing mine, link to their article easily, etc.

What tools do you currently use for writing to your blogs?
.-= Donna@Healthy Vegetarian Recipes´s last blog ..Raw Vegan Chocolate Mousse =-.

wordpress text editor. :D and I also use it for writing anything else that my brain may have made up a story that it will be "hard" to write. There's something about writing blog posts in wordpress that is so easy, natural and fun for m. I sometimes find myself getting stuck trying to write "articles" or "sales pages" or "squeeze pages" I just open a new post in wordpress and it flows right out. Then I just copy/paste it where it needs to go. Crazy but true. :)

I was wondering how you find tumblr compared to the other options as far as the quality of backlinks? It sure is easy to post to, I find it a bit hard to find specific posts later on though. But I was wondering how it compares to the others, for quality of posts just because hear about blogger all the time and hardly ever hear about tumblr.

I'd like to also add Wordpress.com to the list of free blogs. I find them much easier to use (from both the publisher and reader perspectives).

There's a nifty little free extension for the Firefox browser called ScribeFire that makes blog posting really quick and easy. It's great if you find something related while you are surfing and you'd like to post a reference to it. But it also lets you write to multiple blogs, all from the one interface, right at the bottom of your browser window.

Paul,

I wouldn't worry about it. You're not going to get penalized by google for using a google service and making navigation and finding your content easier for you readers. I think this whole "duplicate content" thing is more hype than anything. Provide good content, make it easy to find, treat your readers well and you'll be fine.

Hi Jackie,

I have a question here which might not be relevant as we are only using blogger as a backlinking tool.

When we add in widgets like label/category, archive and recent post (using Feed gadget) all together in a blogger blog, will it be seen as duplicate contents in "google eyes" ?

I am still a bit confused and hope to hear your view on this aspect.

Paul

Thank you for both replies. Much appreciated.

This type of blog is JUST to build backlinks to your "money" pages. The chances they will get traffic is slim to none. I would not worry about monetizing other than maybe a link to the product.

Hi Jackie,

On this type of blog, is it a good idea to ad the monetizing like Adsense?

great content thanks Jackie appreciate your help

Jackie, I just want to ditto on the danger of Blogger. I have a block that was lock for "spam" and there was no span on it. I wrote to them and they unlocked it but it was scary to realize how easy it happens. All I did to trigger the spam filters was changing the template!

So, hosting your own is a good idea.

,..] internetmarketingformommies.com is other interesting source on this subject,..]

Awesome post. The niche blogs can really earn a lot of money just from advertising space. I know that some blogs even charge fees such as 250 per review of a product. It can just take you places. I have few not IM related blogs but will be starting a new IM blog soon!

I pressed the caps button and typed, but the blog page just did not come out that way. I understand what you are saying. I will not spend that much time on blog then. But I will link to squidoo then.

The blog is not supposed to be anything fancy. For this purpose it is ONLY a place to link back to your lens ~ it's a backlinking tool. There's no need to spend a bunch of time on it, to make it fancy or look pretty ~ chances are it will NEVER SEE ANY TRAFFIC that's not it's purpose.

Whether you decide to just go with a blog or lenses ~ either way you are going to have to keep building links if you want/expect to get any traffic to either one of them.

Why would you want a heading in all caps? Press the cap lock button and type.

All you have to do is write a short post and put an anchor text link back to your lens in the blog post. THAT'S IT.

You're making it way to complicated.

Thank You for all your help, I do understand that you cannot hold everyone's hand but, I am finding it a bit difficult to customize my blog the way that I want it. I understand how to add images, links, pictures etc.. but little things like putting the heading in all caps is not covered in any tutorial. And plus, just moving things around to just fit. I have been working on this all day and I just cannot find a place to start. I already have the products I need to promote, and due to time, it would be difficult for me to do squidoo and blogs. So I just decided to use blogs and link them to the product, but now I'm thinking is that enough?.
