    I don’t want to spend money to make money . . .

    By Jackie | March 28, 2008

It just doesn’t seem “right” you know what I mean.

I have heard this statement at least 5 times in the last week and what I want to say in reply is this.

NO I DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN.

I can certainly understand not wanting to spend more than you can afford, but if you are going to start a business there is going to be some kind of investment involved.

I think people coming online to make money have gotten completely spoiled. I mean come on, would you, could you, start a business offline and  expect not to spend money to make money? HMMMM  I don’t think so.  What makes people think that business online is all that different.

Let’s just take a couple of real life examples. My husband is building a construction business. Over the last few years he has invested tens of thousands of dollars in his business. For tools, equipment, paying employees.

A friend of mine is building a therapeutic massage business. Her current budget is over 150,000 dollars and that’s just to get started!!!

Now I understand this is exactly the reason why people come online, because they can’t afford a hundred thousands dollars to start a business, but you have to expect that the same rules of building a business still apply even though you are online. There are going to be costs, whether it’s start up costs, advertising, tools you need. Yes, there are tons of free resources online, but when it comes down to it, to be successful you are going to have to spend  money.  It may only be 30 dollars, but there are costs.

This whole “I’m not going to spend money to make money” thinking is just ridiculous to me.

Listen, I have tried the whole I’m not spending money on an online business, and here’s what I’ve found. When there’s no monetary investment there’s no emotional investment. It’s so easy to give up when you hit a speedbump, because there is nothing to lose. You have nothing invested so nothing keeps you going.

Yes, you probably have a why ~ a great reason why you are trying to build a business online ~ but when there’s nothing invested it’s just too easy to say ~ “ah, that didn’t work” and jump to the next thing. When you are jumping from thing to thing you will never succeed.   You can FAIL at LOTS of businesses… or you can SUCCEED at ONE business… but you’ll NEVER succeed by dividing your efforts and trying to build more than one business at a time or giving up on one thing and moving on to the next.

I know this is a rant, and I don’t usually rant, but come on. If you are expecting to earn money on the internet or in the brick and mortar world you are going to have to invest some money to make some money.

If you think I’m way off base, I’d love to hear from you, but don’t give me theory. I want a real life example of someone who spent no money and made tons of money.  Bring ‘em on!
