K.I.S.S. Cast Episode 1 ~ Keep It Simple So… You Can Get Started

Here is it Wednesday night well after 7pm 8pm and I’m just now getting my post up on my blog. That’s because today is a big day in JackieLand. Today is the day that a goal I set in January has come to fruition.

Today is my first podcast! I spent the day creating my intro and outro music (with Hanna’s help of course), downloading and installing the plugin that will allow you to listen to the podcast ~ as well as distribute it to itunes for me.

AND most of all it’s the day that I got up the courage to actually DO it! I had a lot of stuff going on about talking. I am a great writer ~ I love to write. I can go back and edit, reword, rework my words, it’s not that simple when you’re just talking. I come from NY so I’m a pretty fast talker, and I always have so much to say I want to cram it all in to the next 5 seconds ~ and then there was the worry I wouldn’t have enough to say on my own to fill a 15 to 30 minute podcast. Yes, it seems absolutely contrary, but that’s what was going on.

To make this first episode a little easier for me I invited my fabulous friend, and accountability partner Mary K to join me so we could have a conversation. That conversation was about getting started. What holds us back ~ both mentally and physically and how we can overcome those things to get started.

Like anything new ~ it couldn’t just go as planned. There were many issues I had to figure out while uploading the podcast ~ so please let me know how your audio quality it. (There were many times when it sounded like Jackie the Chipmunk ~ but I believe I’ve gotten it fixed.)

So here it is! The very first K.I.S.S Cast ~

Keep It Simple So… You can get started!

I can’t wait to hear what your opinions, and I’d love to hear what you do to overcome those obstacles that get in the way of getting started. Feel free to leave them in the comments section below!

Jackie, I loved your podcast. You and Mary K hit on so many valid reasons why it is so hard for some people to get started on becoming successful….it is, for me. What you said about sabotaging yourself is oh, so true in my case. I feel defeated before I even begin. It’s like Mary K said, sometimes you feel like you don’t have anything important to contribute…. if you got the idea, then someone else probably had the same idea already…so they wouldn’t be interested in reading what you have to say anyway….. and on and on… Also, what you said about having so many things going on at once leading to nowhere…. that’s me. My problem is getting focused on one thing and staying with that one thing. I constantly get distracted and find myself surfing all over the internet when my intention was to click and get info on how to do the ‘one thing’ I started to do. And there went my day. Your insight about writing a list and sticking to a plan is really a God-given. I have never tried that, had never even thought about it, but I sure will give it my best shot. Another one was the time factor and doing ‘the task’ even when you don’t feel like doing it. Using 15 minutes if that’s all you have instead of giving up because you only have 15 minutes and think that’s not enough time to do something. Mary K said something that struck home with me also. She said she kept thinking more about ‘her’ doing the project than about the project itself. I do that a lot and it sets me up for failure because I envision myself unable to do the project. I have excuses after excuses why I cannot even begin to get started. I noticed from the comments that this was done in June last year. I just got it, so for me it’s new and I’m excited to try it out.. Would like to hear more of your podcast ideas. Heather sounds like a cutie!

      Hey Cristina,
Thank you for such an insightful comment. :)

I’m no longer doing the podcast… however… Mary K and I are now doing a weekly radio show over at Blog Talk Radio called “Around the Kitchen Table”. :) You can call in or participate via the chat room, or just listen to the replay. You’ll find it at http://www.celebratewahms.com and I also put the Around the Kitchen Table reply up after the show on itsawahmlife.com

  3. Julie from Bonsai Academy says:

Jackie – LOVE THIS! I felt like I was listening to myself talk when you said that you’d get in your own way. It reminded me of what Abraham says…If you want it…you can have it when you just get out of the way.

I am one of those who is guilty of feeling the need to do things perfectly. I need to learn that doing something..ANYTHING is better than doing nothing. I would feel like a failure when I didn’t work the entire 30 minutes I set aside for myself. I’d beat myself up and that would cause me to not want to do anything else because I was a failure. Isn’t that silly?

I really appreciate these blogcasts! Please keep them coming!

  4. Geoff from San Diego homes for sale says:

Keeping it simple is a good policy all around. First, like you said, it keeps you from making excuses for not doing it. Second, the audience and customers get confused by things that aren’t simple. WordPress with a simple two-column page design was just the ticket to start my San Diego real estate blog. Adding features over time is fun and easier than doing it all at once.

  5. Jackie says:

Believe me… I’ve got plenty of years of planners filled only through the first 2 weeks of January. :) It’s a process.

Start deciding at the end of the day what (exactly) what you want to get done the next day.

Here’s what mine looks like today:

    blog post
    publish video
add 5 friends at twitter moms
    interact 5 places twittermoms
    submit video to twittermoms
do a blog post with video at twittermoms
    Same as above at mombloggers

This morning I went to do my video ~ the wind was howling ~ so I set up inside ~ then Hanna woke up half way through the video ~ had to find a new place to record ~

I was like dang ~ this is not going to work today. BUT… there’s no way I was going to fail the challenge on DAY 2!!! I managed to get it done and it came out good!

Then I work on the rest of the things on my list BEFORE I allow myself to go and do all the other fun things online I like to do.

Maybe an accountability partner would work for you? I find it very helpful to know every morning I’m going to have to tell someone whether I did or didn’t do what I said I was gonna do the day before. ??

  6. Lynn says:

Funny, I have gotten the coolest planners over the years and find at the end of each calendar year….they are basically empty.

I’m the Queen of the unfinished projects. I get distracted and jump around A LOT.

However, in the past when I was under the gun (at a regular job working for employers) and there is a severe consequence looming (end of month processing, client demands, etc)….then I would get it done no matter what. I would go into Commando mode and have laser focus until the job was done. I work best under pressure (by somebody else). Not that my bosses ever had to babysit me or make me work. No, it was more like my ego would never tolerate failing to deliver and cause me embarrassment/humiliation in front of a boss.

Now I’m humiliated while in the comfort of my own home in front of my computer. Commando mode is non-existent while TMZ and email and various blogs are calling……

I’m definitely the worst boss that I’ve ever had…..lol

  7. Jackie says:

That sounds really frustrating. I also have the problem of having “too many” ideas and not enough time.

I’ve found planners/planning sheets to be really helpful with this. It allows me to write down all the ideas I have, and plan them in ~ but not right now ~ because I already have a main focus right now ~ when I get this done I can pick up a new project.

It’s kind of like declutterings 1 in 1 out rule ~ if you bring one thing in you have to send one thing out ~ same with ideas. I have to get one idea done before I can put another on my plate. However~ I’ve found if I write it down, document the ideas around it that are exciting me I can get back to that excited space when I’m done with what I’m working on.

When I put my main goals out on paper ie. what I want to accomplish this month ~ it is much easier to break it down for each week ~ what’s the focus this week? Then for each day I can fetter out exactly what action steps can be taken to keep me moving toward the goal.

Until I started doing this I was all over the map ~ great ideas left undone because each time I got started some new awesome idea would come to me and the last one would get left…

It’s about business ~ would your boss let you do that? You’re the boss of this operation now. Sometimes you just have to do what needs to be done.

Just remember to always give yourself credit for ALL the things you do (even the little tiny things) and celebrate ALL your successes (even the little tiny ones). It’s those thing that will give you the momentum to continue.

    • Donna from Healthy Vegetarian Recipes says:

Wow, that was such a great comment Jackie, it could be a post in it’s own right! This is the thing I really need help with. I have far too many things on my plate, and I get overwhelmed by it and it can just freeze me and then I get nothing done.

I really understand the Urgent vs Important thing, but I really need to keep it in mind more.

I love the 1 in 1 out rule! That’s what I need. I’ve been using EFT to help with my feelings of overwhelm, and to help me get away from multitasking so I can focus on ONE thing at a time.

  8. Lynn says:

I have always admitted to people that I have a fear of failing and a fear of succeeding. It’s truly an odd place to be mentally. Not sure what the driving force behind it is. Perhaps, it’s old “programming” that needs deleted altogether. It is also the perfectionist/Type A personality. If I cannot do it “Perfect” and fully research and understand each piece of the puzzle FIRST…….then my “goals” just stay in my mind and never come to fruition.

For me, these issues all lead to even more procrastination for me and more procrastination leads to more time wasted and more time wasted leads to no money made and no money made leads to more stress. Tomorrow becomes the next day and the next week and soon enough another whole MONTH goes by with absolutely NOTHING accomplished other than some really vivid goals that are just sitting in my mind SCREAMING get out of my mind, yet my fingers are frozen to act.

Funny thing is……I already know that if I just go ahead and DO IT and start eating the elephant one bite at a time, that I feel a lot better. I know this about myself. The absolute ELATION of TAKING ACTION and getting something accomplished. (Much like you probably felt after you posted your Podcast) The problem is…..I never seem to keep the pace and revert back to the miserable state of paralysis by analysis.

I also seem to want everything NOW and have SO MANY IDEAS and things that I want to accomplish. A zillion things are swirling in my brain all at once that I just end up losing focus and never get anything done. Since I already know that I cannot do it all in one day and since I constantly berate myself for all the time I have wasted……I just throw up my hands and go back to being “busy” reading emails, reading the Squidoo product blueprint AGAIN (LOL) or reading the Super Affiliate Handbook again or spending HOURS on Jackie’s blog or HOURS or even DAYS on Lynn Terry’s blog……

Gee……people are amazed with all I have learned….lol……yet I have not taken enough real ACTION and put all that knowledge into motion.

It’s really a terrible state that I’ve been stuck in for quite a long time…..

    Jackie,

That was a great first podcast! It was just what I needed to hear today. I will be implementing some of your suggestions for treating my business as the priority it really is.

    Jackie,

That sounded great and Hanna really put a smile on my face!!

While listening you helped me remember something someone told me at the very beginning of starting my business and I wanted to share.

“Treat your business like a business and it will PAY you like a business… Treat your business like a hobby and it will COST you like a hobby”

I had forgotten that very important quote – but listening you really helped jog my memory and I feel invigorated now…. done with lens 12 now…. 38 more to go to get to goal of 50.

  11. Jackie says:

What do you mean by distribute? Not that you can’t ~ I’m just new to this and wonder what you mean? Yes, spread the word, by all means.

    • Dennis Edell from Direct Sales Marketing says:

I just meant are we allowed to give away the podcast itself. You could say you offer “giveaway rights”, as it were. :)

      • Jackie says:

hadn’t thought about that. I don’t see why not ~ how would you do that?

        • Dennis Edell from Direct Sales Marketing says:

It would be easy enough to zip, clip to the server for download, whatever.

This is a good thing to think about before releasing a product; maybe adding a “rights” read me file, especially if you DON’T want it distributed.

Some, especially beginners, will automatically think anything FREE is allowed to be given away. Moat marketers don’t care, as long as the proper attribution is there, but you never know what they’ll do.

          • Jackie says:

That’s true, and I do for products ~ but I didn’t think about this as a product ~ it was more like content to me. I don’t really care if people share it or not. The whole point of a podcast is to get listeners right.

  12. Dennis Edell from Direct Sales Marketing says:

I’ve downloaded for later consumption, but I will tell you what I think! ;)

  14. This urgent vs. important thing is so very powerful my friend.

My god you have kicked me in the butt big time with this podcast.

Do the work. Do the important thing first. Approach your business AS A BUSINESS! Would you hire yourself? Be aware of what time of day would be optimum for your business? Even if you only have 15 minutes, you can do SOMETHING in 15 minutes.

If the two of you are not coaching others – you need to be.

  15. WOW… I LOVE that greeting from Hanna and loaded with a KISS!!!

Thanks so much Jackie… for being a true friend with the heart to tell the truth! I know I personally benefit greatly… and I trust I’m not alone!!!

*Mmmwah!* to you my friend, again… CONGRATULATIONS on your first K.I.S.S. CAST

  16. Jackie says:

Glad it sounded good for you.

Yeah there’s a big difference between “urgent” and “important”. It’s still something I struggle with. The urgent things will still be there and just as urgent and hour from now when the important things are done. Let me know how it goes for you!

  17. Dawn from probiotic supplements says:

Well done on completing your task. Podcast sound great. Sound quality is great for me and I have el-cheapo speakers.

Started off listening to your podcast and working but after a few moments stopped working just to concentrate on what you were saying.

I have rebelled against this “do the most important task first” for awhile but I am hearing it from so many people who’s opinion I respect that I really am going to try it.

I tell myself that my situation is different – oh, ego, calm yourself!

Because I live on the other side of the world from most of my readers, when I wake up, they are a good part through their day. So I always feel I really NEED to look at emails first. And then I should look at stats. I mean stats are important. And it seems to flow on from emails.

But I know that emails and stats are not the most important task I have to do in the day.

You’ve convinced me, Jackie. I shall try it.
