Overcoming Writer’s Block

At some point in your blogging business you’re going to hit it… writer’s block. I personally feel like it is more a lack of inspiration, but most people call it writer’s block.

Yesterday I sat at my desk for a couple hours banging my head, trying to force things to work, and the harder I tried to make it happen the more things got messed up and refused to work. I’ve got a couple things that I promised myself I’d have done by the end of the week. I’ve been completely uninspired to write them and it’s getting toward the end of week.

It’s times like these when I have a “deadline” looming that I find it very easy to slip into “make it work” mode. Whether it’s trying to create an image, or write a sales letter, or even blog posts. I just sit here and try to “make it work”. I know I’m not the only one ~ I’ve gotten plenty of emails that start something like this…

“for the last 3 hours I’ve been trying to …”

you fill in the blank, or change the 3 to a 5 ~ it all depends on how dug in your are. :)

Let me offer another option

It may seem crazy, and counterintuitive, but it works!  Ready? Here goes.

Get up and walk away.

Yeah ~ when you’ve only got a little bit of time to devote to this whole thing it seems ridiculous to spend it walking away, but that can be the very best thing you do for yourself and your project.

My brain (and maybe yours) is a lot like my 4 year old. When she wants to do something it’s super easy to get her to do it. When she doesn’t want to do something it’s like trying to drag a donkey uphill in 100 degree weather. It just doesn’t happen.

My brain is the same way ~ if it’s not ready, willing and able to engage in a project I’m just going to end up spinning my wheels, getting frustrated, getting mad, and in the end STILL not get anything done.

I handle my brain a lot like I handle my 4 year old. :) (very sad… but still very true). I take a break. I walk away, do something else that is fun or at least lets me relax a little bit. Same thing with Hanna, if I just keep pushing her we’re going to get into a battle of the wills and I think at this point she can probably beat me. So I walk away, take a break, and then a few minutes later come back to the situation. It’s usually with a bit different attitude, a different feeling, a different “energy”, if you will, toward the situation.

Low and behold ~ we can usually get it worked out. Same with my brain. Yesterday we took off to the zoo. (It was going to be the only day for another couple weeks under 95 degrees ~ so it was a good day to go, and the idea of getting out and away from the house was VERY appealing).

The thing about going to the zoo for me is this: I have a long car ride. There’s something about driving in my car (which I don’t do that much of anymore) that brings up ideas. I did a video at the zoo so of course the whole way there I was mapping that out, but the drive home really brought some great ideas to the forefront for the project I was working on earlier in the day.

When I got home I was able to easily write what I needed to write ~ well at least the first draft ~ the framework is on paper ~ so it can be worked and revamped.

Here’s the thing… I did it in like 25 minutes. I spent hours earlier in the day banging my head, but when I got back it seriously just flowed out easily and effortlessly and the draft was done quickly.

That’s the power of walking away.

I don’t have time to go to the zoo!

I hear you. Not everyone has all day to just hop off to the zoo. You can still use the walk away strategy though. Just do it on a smaller scale.

Mow the yard
Do the dishes
play a game with your kiddo
take a walk around the block
cook something
take a shower
brush the dog or take him for a walk
listen to your favorite feel good song
work out

There are a million things you can do to change up the energy you’re in. The one thing I suggest you DON’T do is sit down in front of the TV. That will sap your brain power and will not help you get back to the computer ~ at least it doesn’t for me.

Engage in something that engages your brain and your other senses.  By engaging your body and your mind in another task you open up space for new inspiration to hit you.

Oh ~ and when you leave the computer it’s a good idea to get really clear about what you want to show up for yourself. Yesterday I really wanted to be clear on the specifics of something. Sure enough, when I sat back down the specifics were right there waiting for me.

So there you have it… how I beat writer’s block aka lack of inspiration. What do you do to find inspiration and write or produce something when you feel uninspired or blocked?

PS. On a totally different topic ~  you know I’m doing this 30 day video challenge. I did another video at the zoo yesterday. If you’re enjoying the new video element I’d really appreciate it if you’d watch it and tell me a couple things

1. which style do you like better
2. what length works for you (I just read someone say keep them less than 2 minutes and I’m wondering if that’s true )
3. anything else you’d like to add

I’m asking because I really do not like to watch videos so I’m not really a very good opinion on what people like. I have found I’m really enjoying making them though. :)

Here’s the video:  Finding Inspiration

Thanks a lot ~ you can leave your comments at youtube or come back here, whatever works for you.

Thanks again. :)

I agree, sometimes walking away and stepping back from the pressure is all you can do. Somedays you have it and somedays you don't. Human nature. And if anyone says they have it everday, their lying.

Amen! Some days you really just don't feel like writing and when that happens, just get up and do something else. It could mean that you're just bored and that you need to get out and live a little!

I just watched the video of you and your little girl at the zoo.... very nice! I liked it a lot.

Quick question... did you do a voice over recording? I tried this out last week and really liked it.

No I didn't do a voice over ~ That was just me talking at the zoo. There was a bunch of rowdy kids that came in right at the end, and they were like "A CAMERA" and tried to take it. Like they couldn't see me standing right there talking into it lol.

The first video I had the "script" in my head, and just started a new piece at each stop we made and put them all together in movie maker.

Great tips Jackie. When I discover I have been working at my computer too long then I will take a quick break. Here is what I like to do:

-Walk around my block (10 minutes)
-Play with my dog for a few
-Meditate
-Stand outside soaking up the sun (or sit if I have been standing for a while)
-Stretch
-Do a quick exercise (maybe a few jumping jacks, push-up or 2, etc.)

There are many other things to do, but this is what I have found my self doing recently. It is amazing how much better our brain flows when we take a break when necessary.

I have also been taking more very short breaks, 1-2 minutes worth. Every 20 minutes or so I will simply stop what I am doing and just look out the window.

Thanks for another great article!

Great post! It really is inspiring and funny at the same time!

So true. I find that if I try and force myself to do something that I really don't feel inspired to do, it's that much harder to do it. But, if I take a break and do something fun or relaxing, it's much easier to get the task done and in a shorter period of time when I come back to it.

Thanks for a great post!

Laura :O)

It is so important to take breaks from any project that starts weighing you down. Another thing that I've found with my San Diego real estate blog is that sometimes I have to resist the temptation to be perfect. Fact is, none of us are ever perfect. But writers block usually hits during that drive for perfection.

It's not that I don't have ideas ~ sometimes I have too many ideas. Sometimes I need some inspiration to put them together in the "right" way.

That day I happened to have been working on a sales page ~ and those need a little more inspiration for me than a blog post (which I don't really have any problems with)

Everyone's a little different, and will experience lack of inspiration or writer's block somewhere, somehow, even if it just isn't the right day to be working on a project.

Turns out the very next day Dave Navarro released some KILLER content on creating a simple sales page. Maybe my lack of inspiration was really divinely inspired? :)

Too many idea is my problem. I'd have to post 20 per day to use them all. lol

While I read so many posts on writers block, I'm sittin' here tryin' to figure out how I can sell ideas. LOL!

Luckily I haven't hit this problem; dunno as I ever will to be honest. I draft 1-5 or more ideas daily as it is. lol.

Videos - Most that don't NEED more are 2-4monutes or so.

Needing more - reviews, tutorials, etc.

I find that a rhythmic, solitary activity helps get the energies flowing the right direction. I get so many ideas when I'm out on the bicycle or hiking in the woods.

Absolutely!! I find the same thing when I ride my bike. I wish I could ride it more often, that would be my favorite strategy to overcome writer's block, but I find it difficult to get out and ride with Hanna ~ (our bike trailer broke)

Jackie,

I can totally relate to how getting away from the computer can help you figure something out.

Many times the cause of my blockage is the fact that the dishes need to be done or the living room floor needs vacuuming. I find that after an hour's worth of cleaning or stepping away from a problem will help me get through my problem.

Thanks for letting me know that I'm not the only one with this problem.

Jackie, excellent advice and post. I also break away from everything at times and then go back at it, starting with a fresh new approach.

Many times this can unlock the creative juices and gets the ball rolling again.

Kind of on a different note, I've heard if you are trying to remember something and can't, then stop trying to remember and after a few minutes it will come to you anyway.

Even though you are not consciously trying to remember, your subconscious is still searching for the answer and will retreive it once it is found.

As an article marketer and blogger myself, I experience writer's block at times, sometimes just taking 5 minutes away from my computer and new ideas will begin popping into my head again, and if that don't work I sometimes use this really cool title spinner I have for coming up with ideas for new article titles and blog posts.

Once I sit and spin a few titles, I start getting more ideas about what I want to write about again.

Anyway, great post.

Here is a youtube link to the title spinner I use , just in case you want to check it out.

If you feel this link is spamming your post, please delete the link and post the edited version as I am in no way wanting to spam anybody, just wanting to share this cool tool.

Thanks,

For those of you watching and enjoying the videos I'd love your feedback ~ I've added a little PS to this post. If you have time to check it out I'd appreciate it. :)

Have a Margarita!

Seriously though... "they" always say to never try to force something to happen because it will show in your work in a negative way.

Take a nice drive in a beautiful neighborhood and pick out the house you will live in once you get the job done and are reaping the rewards.

Treat yourself to a massage...anything to relax and get the issue off your mind. Once you let go of thinking and worrying about the job that you have to get done your subconscious mind can relax enough to do it for you and all of a sudden the ideas start to flow.

Michele

I can't always walk away from the computer, but I do find that moving on to another job is the best thing to do.

If I'm trying to write and I'm really stuck for ideas, I'll go to MicroNiche Finder and type in a color, or an object, or an animal... and often, something will 'hit' me.
