Squidoo Lens Tutorial: The next few modules

2009 October 2
by Jackie

We’re going to keep moving through this Squidoo lens tutorial to the second module in the lens. The first text module.

I like to use the first text module to focus on some of the features of the product.

What I don’t do is copy the bullet point list from amazon and paste it in my lens. Nope. Don’t do that. :(

What you do want to do is look at the bullet point list and see what the best features about your product are. (and there may not be a bullet point list. There may be a paragraph, there should be reviews ~ both of which you can also get this info) So once you figure out what the cool features of this product are let people know.

Make sure to space the content so it’s easy to read, use a couple spaces between each benefit or add an asterick or something to delineate what you’re talking about.

Make sure you use your keywords in the title, and you can mention that you’re going to talk about the features as well. It’s fun to put something witty in the subtitle box. :)

Make sure you have a text link to your product in your text module. Use your keywords as anchor text ~ you’ll have to use html to do this, but you know how. :)

**Cool Tip: Don’t use ALL the features you can find about the product. Leave a few out, and make a link at the bottom of your module that says, for a full list of the keyword product name features click here: then link to the product page.

Once you’ve done that go ahead and add another image of the product, and save.

The Most Important Thing Module:

This is where I put my visual call to action. This way it has a nice big orange box around it and stands out quite nicely. I’ve detailed in this post how to create your visual call to action and upload it to Squidoo.

The Poll Module:

The poll module serves a couple functions in my lenses. It gets people interacting. Everyone loves to take a poll. The more people interact with your site the more they will begin to trust you and your recommendation.

The second reason I like to add a poll module is it gives me a chance to bring up reasons why buying this product would be a great thing ~ things they may not have thought of yet in their decision making process.

This could be certain features of the product, it could be reasons why you might want the product, it can be benefits of the product, all good things to put in a poll module. :)

Here’s the poll module for our tutorial lens:

Creating a poll is really easy with Squidoo, just click edit in the top right corner of your lens. Then fill in your title, and a short description ~ it’s always a good idea to put a text link (using your keywords as anchor text) to your product in the description.

Then all you have to do is add options to your poll and save. :)
Here’s what it looks like in edit mode:

There’s a little button right below this (that didn’t get in the picture that says “add another” if you want to add more (because the poll only starts with 2 options) you just click that and another box opens for you to write in.

You’re over half way there when you get done with the poll module!! Yay!

Go ahead and get these modules done. I have some errands to run and I’ll be back later to finish off the the rest of the modules.  If you’ve missed any part of the tutorial you can see all the steps of the  squidoo lens tutorial here.

    OMG this helps soooo much!!!

But am I losing my mind? I can’t find your Ironman lens anymore! Where’d it go?

Thank you!!! After a few hours away from this, I couldn’t find the link to it on your site again. So I typed in the entire name in squidoo and it returned 0 lenses.

What’s weird is that it’s still doing it. I just right now went to your ironman lens, copied the title and pasted it into squidoo search and it invited me to be the first to build a lens on it. Strange.

huh ~ it may be because I only just made it today so it doesn’t have a green check yet so it won’t come up when searched until tomorrow when it gets a green check.

    Wonderful tutorial!! =)

Thank you for doing this Jackie! I’ve paid for Squidoo ebooks that didn’t provide this much information. The breakdown of each module and what should be included is priceless! And I love your little tips thrown in.

I’ve been slow to embrace Squidoo because it seemed a bit confusing to me. Not anymore! This tutorial and your Squidoo Christmas Cash ebook have made all the difference.

    Hi Jackie

Thank you so much for Squidoo Christmas Cash – you explain things so clearly. It is good to have a straighforward guide to follow.

I have the printed version beside me with lots of highlighting.

I have put my first lens up.
I’ve just realised that the Poll is more of a “what features do I like” rather than “which products on Amazon do you like”.

It wasn’t till I came to putting on the video that I discovered the list of possible page types, so I was trying to work in the parameters of what was given.

    Just learning.
Comments would be welcome either from you – or from other budding internet stars!

    Cheers

Congrats on getting started and taking action!! That’s half the battle. I’ve outlined how I do the lenses, to give you a starting place, but every lens is a work of art ~ so put yourself into it. Give it your personality. The basic SEO stuff needs to stay ~ anchor text/keywords in title, but other than that you can make them you’re own, they need to be exactly as I have outlined. :)

You’ve been a blessing when it comes to figuring this stuff out.
    Thanks so much,

    Hi Jackie

Would you still do ‘the visual call to action’ if a product doesn’t indicate any savings?

check and see if it has free shipping ~ you can feature free shipping as well as a savings. I always choose products with at least one of those.
