It is part of how you can tell how Google regards any given site. If you see a site that is #1 on google with a PR of 1 you can probably beat it with minimal effort. However, if you see a site #1 on google with a pr of 5 or 6 It's going to be much tougher. I've also found when you find sites that are #1 on google with really high PR it's not just the top site that has high pr it's the whole page. Yeah you could beat them if you put in a TON of time and effort, but with sooooo many niches and keywords available ~ why bother. I look at the first page of competition because that's where I want to be #1 on google for my keyword ~ so those are the actual sites I'm going to have to beat.
