The Bottom Line is “What’s Your Keyword”
May 21
We all know the first step to getting traffic from Google is doing your keyword research. Now you’ve found some killer keywords and you are getting ready to write content. Let’s just say we are doing a Squidoo lens for this post. When it comes to writing your content it’s really easy to try to sell your product instead of your “keywords”.
You chose the keywords you are using because people were searching for it, and there was a low enough level of competition that you thought you could get to #1 on google right? I sure hope so!
When you get ready to write your content it is really easy to forget about your keywords and write to sell your product. This is REALLY easy to do when you start writing in the internet marketing arena. The thing is you chose these keywords for a reason ~ because people are looking for information on that topic.
Here’s how it usually happens ~ your product has a free trial, or a free report or whatever, and you think “I could make a lot of sales by talking about the FREE whatever” ~ however, your keywords have nothing to do with a free trial ~ or even about your product ~ they are about finding a solution.
Let’s look at an example:
You’ve looked around and found some great keywords for LearnItStepbyStep.com ~ maybe “squidoo help” is your keyword. Now you know that LearnItStepbyStep offers a 2 day free trial for both membership levels. You think you can get a bunch of traffic based on the free trial ~
However ~
That’s not really what people googling squidoo help are looking for ~ is it? Not really. They are looking for squidoo help. So why not provide some good information on squidoo ~ give them some squidoo help. Then when you use the keywords squidoo help on your page link to the learnitstepbystep sales page ~ let the sales page sell the free trial.
Here’s another good example:
You’ve found some great keywords on keyword research ~ (this is pretty tough to do admittedly, but let’s just go with “find great keywords” for the example). You want to sell people the wordtracker keyword software, and they offer a free trial.
Are you going to go into your lens talking about the free wordtracker trial? You could, but I believe it will be much more effective if you show people how to “find great keywords”. When you use your keywords in your lens, go ahead and link to wordtracker ~ let the sales page sell the free trial. You provide great content that is exactly what your searcher is looking for.
One more just for fun.
You find some great keywords for dungeons and dragons online. They offer a free 10 day trial. If your keyword is about something particular to the game ~ you don’t want to go in saying “get the 10 day free trial” ~ you want to provide content directly relevant to the specific keywords you have chosen to use for that page/lens/site. If you offer a link that appears to help them solve the problem they will click on it. Then the sales page will sell the free trial.
Even though it is really easy to start selling your product when you are using keywords as the basis of your page you want to make sure you provide quality content that is about your keywords ~ not your product.
Your job is to create curiosity ~ provide some information ~ as Jimmy D. Brown says ~ useful but incomplete ~ give them something to work with, and then lead them to the sales page. Let the sales page do the selling. If you start to wonder if you should use certain things about your product in your content just ask yourself “What’s my keyword”, if they are a match use it, if not, create content that is directly connected and lead them to the sales page as the solution.

Thanks! Key words really do matter. Thanks for the keyword tips.
Excellent point about forgetting about keywords. I know I have been guilty of that myself! I learned a new way of looking at my copy when I write now. I love the point of view! I think your article is something everyone needs to read from time to time! Its a good reminder! Thank for your sharing!
Finding the perfect keyword is a key to success. If it’s related to your site’s theme and doesn’t have a lot of competition you should be making money in no time.
As an affiliate marketer and a SEO/SEM manager for several high ranking websites I can attest to the fact that finding the right keyword for any niche is the most important part of any campaign… Not just the singular first tier keywords but long tail second tier keywords and phrases as well. A second tier key phrase might not get you as many unique visits but they will get you a higher ROI. Because a second tier keyword will bring in more target traffic. Thus getting people that want to buy what you have to your webpage. And this is why you need to have a good keyword research partner behind you.
