The Secret of Building Quality Links

2009 October 8
by Jackie

Building links is the secret to getting your lens/blog to show up in the search engine ranking. However, there is a secret to building these links ~ a secret that makes them super effective or almost useless. Wanna know the secret?

Anchor text

Yep, anchor text. This is the key ingredient to making your links work for you. So let’s get to it.

What is anchor text?

Anchor text is the word or phrase of a link that you click on. Anchor text also lets the Big G know what the site you are linking to is about ~ so let them know.

Here’s an example of a not so great link:

Here’s another version of a not so great link:

Yeah they are both clickable links ~ and people will be able to get to your site by clicking it, but you’re not building a quality link there.

Here’s a quality link.

Check out this website for more information about the Ironman Gravity 4000 Inversion Table

You see the difference? This is a crucial piece of the puzzle and I want to make sure you all understand this because you will be using these kind of links in all the upcoming linking we will be doing.

You want ALL of your links to be your keyword ~ not click here, or the url.

Now that I’ve said that I have to contradict myself a little,  because Internet marketing is so straight forward and easy. :)

It is also good to VARY your anchor text some. So you might use Ironman Gravity 4000 inversion table for some links. You might use learn about ironman gravity 4000 inversion table today as another link. You might even use ironman gravity 4000 for a link or two, you might use ironman gravity inversion table for another link.

Don’t freak out about this, just realize it’s ok to add the words/phrase that comes before or after your keywords in your anchor text.  If you go through the Ironman lens you’ll see that I’ve altered the anchor text in a few places ~you don’t really need to do this in your lens because those links are pointing to amazon, but I wanted to show you how it can work. Because when you start building backlinks that point to YOUR LENS you want to change up the text a little bit once in a while that leads back to your lens. (this is especially important if you are using a service/software to send out articles for your links.)

How do I Make an Anchor Text Link?

You’re going to use a bit of code for this. I went over this  when talking about getting html from Amazon, and the same applies here. You’re going to use the same bit of code for all your links.

Here’s your code that you want to use.

<a href=”http://yoururlhere.com”>your keywords here</a>

Now let’s break it down into bite sized pieces:

“http://yoururlhere.com” (and yes you need the quotes in the code)

This is going to be your lens url ~ where people are going to go when they click the link.

your keywords here

This is where you are going to type the words or phrase that is your keyword. (the one you found during your research)

So for the ironman lens this is what it will look like in code:

<a href=”http://www.squidoo.com/ironman-gravity-4000-inversion-table”>Ironman Gravity 4000 Inversion Table”>

Now when all is said and done it will look like this:

Ironman Gravity 4000 Inversion Table

OK ~ I hope that’s clear how to do that.

Now in most places you won’t have to use code ~ if you’re on a blog, the free ad sites and now a lot of other places you’ll be able to use the text editor to create your links. Which is much easier. :)

How to  create a link in a text editor:

Type the words you want to be your text in the link.

Highlight the text by left clicking and dragging the cursor over the words you want to highlight.

Once your words are highlighted you want to find the little anchor icon in the editor above.

When you click the icon a new small box will open. It will ask you for the url of the site you want to link to.

Fill in the link url ~ making sure to have the http:// part included.

Then choose to open in a new window. This will leave the site they are on open, but will open a new window for the lens they are going to.

Click insert, and you now have a keyword anchor text clickable link. :)

Now that we’ve covered how to make a keyword anchor text link, please remember to use them as you go about creating links back to your site.

Next we’re going to cover some more ways to create backlinks to your site. If you have html or linking questions please leave them in the comments.

Good stuff, Jackie. The “click here” method is so lazy and takes away a very valuable part of injecting SEO benefits. Using the title tag in your links is a good thing, too, though it’s not going to cripple things if you don’t.

I’m glad you pointed out the new window variable. One thing that most people forget is to make the link open in a new window. That’s so important because it’s one more change of someone not leaving you with just a click.

    Hey Mark,

Thanks for the kind words. I wouldn’t say it’s “lazy” to use “click here” I just think that most beginners don’t know how much they lose by doing it that way. For beginners, I wouldn’t even worry about the title tag ~ let’s start with getting some keyword anchor text in the links and we’ll take one step at a time from there. :)

    Hi Jackie,

It took me about two weeks to put up 15 lenses. They are not really that difficult. But since it was my first time putting up lenses on Squidoo and I have family in town for another month, things were slowing me down.

I am trying to figure out backlinks. I am thinking of putting up some more lenses or submitting to other article directory. But since we are in the 2nd week of December, I would need to build links faster. I facebooked and tweeted them, but I haven’t really hung out or used those much. I glanced through your lens about backlinks and would like to ask your suggestion about places I should build links faster.
