Web Traffic Series: Traffic From Youtube

Feb 22

You are all probably aware that video is a great way to get traffic. When using video to get traffic you’re basically finding low competition keywords with some search volume and then doing a quick video on that topic. You then optimize your videos for those keywords ~ using them in the title of the video, in the description area and then using those keywords as the anchor text of any backlinks you build pointing at the video page on youtube.

Once your video ranks in Google you should get some traffic back to your site because you’ve put your url in the description area as well as you should have mentioned it in the video.

That’s the basics on getting traffic from video. I’m not a huge video person so I’m not going to try to pretend to know the ins and outs of creating video and driving traffic with it.  There are people like Gideon Shalwick who are much better prepared to do the teaching about video.

I have recently learned a few tricks to get MORE views on your videos, thus getting you more traffic that I’d like to share today.

1. Add a video response.

If you’ve noticed when viewing other videos you can add a “video response”. I was completely confused by what this term means, but it happens it’s pretty simple to use. You simply upload a video that you’ve done. Go look for popular videos related to yours. When you find one there’s a little link to “leave a video response”. Click it and then choose the video in your account you want to respond with. Done.

Benefits: This gets you and your video right under the video and video responses are looked at quite often ~ more people will be viewing your video.

Options: Intsead of finding a video that’s related after you’ve finished and uploaded one of your own videos why not go looking for popular videos on youtube in your niche? When you find a popular video create a video response, upload and use that one. What a great way to get more ideas for videos!

2. Tag your videos

Yeah, I’m sure you’re thinking this is nothing new Jackie. We all know to tag our videos with our keywords. Yes, that’s important, but that’s not what I’m talking about here. :) Go look for related videos with many many views. Copy their tags and use them on YOUR video. Doing so will bring your video up at the end as “related videos” which should definitely increase your views.

3. Embed Your Videos

Like articles have directories there are many many places you can embed your videos. This will increase the views your videos get as well as help drive more traffic to your site. Here’s a few places you can use to embed your videos ~ this is directly enbedding, using your embed code from Youtube. Some of these are best used with “how to” type videos, but others will work for any kind of video.

wonderhowto.com
Flixya.com
Instructables.com
videosift.com/
imbroadcast.com (strictly internet marketing related videos)

If you belong to any Ning communities related to your topic you can also upload videos there.

So I hope this gives you some ideas on how you can better leverage whatever work you’ve already done in video and maybe even encourages you to get started if you’ve not done any yet. :)

  1. This is a great tip to get traffic. I am going to do some videos on my sites … after I shed a few pounds and get a hair cut.

  2. For those serious about it, you want to check out http://www.webvideouniversity.com/

That itself is a paid membership site, but, there is also a “tip of the week” newsletter (pop up) and a blog…both with awesome free information.

  3. I’m camera-shy too. I love taking photos but don’t like so much being in front of the camera. But coincidentally, earlier today before reading this article I happened to make my first video where I’m actually in the video – rather than a screenshot video. Not sure if I’ll have the courage to put it up on the net after I watch it but I’m psyching myself up for doing more video now. Thanks for the great tips, I’ll definitely try them out.

  4. You don’t have to do a video of yourself. :) I don’t think I’m in any of my videos. You can show a process in person or online ~ you can do a screenshot you show and you talk in the background. You can do a slideshow type video. You can use jing and do a screen capture ~ tons of ideas without ever showing your mug on camera. :)

  5. Hi Jackie,

Thanks for the info – like Julie I am not very keen on getting my face on the internet – but it does seem to be a good way of getting lots of targetted traffic, so I suppose I should give it a try too!!

  6. I’ve never done a video before so I’m a little gunshy when it comes to actually putting my mug on the internet. I think you have a good point that videos are a good way to drive traffic so I’ll have to give this one a try. I need to really think about how this relates to my topic so I can be effective in marketing my site.

  7. Thanks for pointing that out. I think myspace is one of those spaces where marketers have left (for facebook) but the real people have stayed around. Good idea ~ time to take out those myspace accounts and dust them off. :)

  8. Add links on your Myspace to your videos and your page on YouTube. I believe it is a great way for people to find you on Myspace, the entire world can see it and you are more expected to get discovered on Myspace than on YouTube.

  9. Steve ~ good question on tracking but unfortunately I have no idea. I have never tried to track where my video traffic is coming from. Sorry. You might check out Gideon’s site and see if you can find an answer over there. :)

  10. Great Information, Jackie. I just did my first instructional video on youtube more practice than anything else)and will use these techniques to promote itand see what happens. It will also give me a sort of checklist to go by when I do my next one.

I do have one question though. When you do these videos, how can you track what traffic is coming from them and from where? Do you have a set way to do this?

Thanks again for some great info.

  12. Thank Jackie. I did not know that there a video response at youtube.
From your post i learned and going to do my own video soon.

Keep you update once i finish. By the way, I have done a blog on my niche and squidoo lens too. I link my squidoo lens to my blog and also wrote article in goarticles. Just today i join a forum after reading your forum commenting idea.

Thank you for your ideas and molding me to be a better person with good knowledge on internet.

  13. Thanks – I am going to forward this post to my son. He has already had thousands of hits on a Youtube video he put up less than a year ago as part of a 4-H project. It is a ‘how to’ video. He has also put up a few others. I have been telling him he needs to start using these videos to drive traffic to his website (he sells game server slots and makes websites for people). This blog post will give him all the advice he needs for now on how to achieve this.
