What Does It Take to Be an Authority Blogger?

Today we’re going to start our series on Authority Blogging. I’m excited to start this topic as it is my favorite internet marketing strategy.  Before we jump in I want to talk a little about what it’s going to take to make this strategy work. I know most of you may be familiar with internet marketing. You’ve probably read a million ebooks. Your head is filled with all the things you MUST do to make internet marketing work. And now… I’m going to tell you to forget it ALL.

Forget everything you’ve read … go ahead. Let it go.

Now is your brain a blank slate? Ok.. good.

What is the purpose of an authority blog?

We’ve built lots of different types of sites on our journey thus far. We’ve built one page Squidoo lenses, we’ve built niche sites and the main purpose in these sites was to push people to an affiliate product and get them to buy.

In those sites you needed to do a lot of keyword research, you had to do a lot of thinking and figuring before you started writing so you could easily place yourself in the buyers stream and divert him to buy what he was looking for from you.

Nothing wrong with that at all, but that’s NOT what we’re doing with our authority sites.

Our purpose with our authority sites (and this is going to be tough to grok for some of you I’m sure) is to create a relationship with your reader, and give them what they need.

Now depending on your topic what they are looking for, what they need may be completely different. It could be a million different things, but YOUR primary job as an authority blogger is to get into the mind of your reader, figure out what they are looking for, what they need, and give it to them.

This means we are not pandering to Google ~ we are not building a list of keywords to write about before we get started, we’re not trying to determine what the “best” keywords to have in our domain name are. We are going out there to build relationships, and interact with people who love to talk about our topic or need some help in our topic area.

Yeah, but…  Yeah,  but… Yeah, but…

I can hear you from here!

It’s ok. Think about it though. Do you think Darren Rowse of Problogger found 40,500 monthly search volume for the term “problogger” when he decided to put his site up? No, my guess there was a big fat 0 ~ but as of this morning there are in fact, over 40 THOUSAND people every month searching for the term problogger.

Darren created that search volume by creating a blog that is an absolute authority resource on becoming an authority blogger or a “pro blogger”.

Do you think there was a ton of search volume for No time for flash cards (my favorite kids craft site) when she started her site only a year or so ago? Nope, and there still isn’t much ~ only 590 monthly search volume ~ however, she has almost 3000 facebook fans ~ believe me she’s got a readership.

What about simple mom? Do you think there was a ton of search volume for that term before the simplemom.net blog got so big? Well she’s got over 21 THOUSAND RSS subscribers and has recently expanded her blog to an entire media network that includes 4 other blogs.

This is what authority blogging is all about. It’s about CREATING your readership. Being the BEST resource on any given topic so when people find your site they bookmark it, they subscribe in RSS and they come back every single day to read what you have to say.

What does it take to be an Authority Blogger?

Here’s what I think it takes.

1. Courage. You have to be willing to be yourself and put yourself out there. The more authentically YOU you are, the more you will connect with your readers and the better your blog will be.This can take a lot of courage, because many times our inner critic is yelling at us that we’re not “good enough” or not “smart” enough, or whatever enough to do this. But you are. Step into your courage and go out there and be yourself. You’ll find people don’t “buy in” to your information they buy YOU!! YOU are the one thing that makes your blog different than any other blog on the internet. You can write a blog on the exact same subject as 5 million other people, and it will never be the same as theirs because it has YOU, and that’s what will keep YOUR readers coming back day after day. :)

2. Persistence. This is not going to happen overnight. You’re not going to have 20K subscribers in the next month or two. It’s going to take time. This doesn’t mean your blog won’t grow in the next month or two, it will. You may even make some money in the next month or two, but you will have to be persistent to make this endeavor work. This is a long term business, not a shot in the pan set it forget it deal.

3. Consistency. You must be consistent. You must publish new content regularly and frequently. You will have to participate in your chosen marketing channels consistently and frequently. Consistency probably should have been #1 if you can’t be consistent you will not be successful with this internet marketing strategy.

4. Passion. If you’re going to still be talking about this topic 3, 5, 8 years from now you had BETTER love what you’re talking about. Seriously. LOVE IT.

5. Motivation. If you are not motivated by something about this you’re not going to succeed. The money can NOT be the motivation. It may take too long to happen and if that’s all you’ve got for motivation you’re going to lose it and quick blogging.  Something else has got to motivate you. Helping people, working through something, I don’t know what it is, but it’s got to be something that will keep you coming back to your computer every single day… no matter what.

What does it take to be an expert?

You might be concerned you aren’t an “expert” on anything. Well please, don’t let that stop you.  It’s just a matter of how you define “expert”. On the internet an expert is defined as someone who knows more than most other people on any given topic.

Now think about that. Do you think most people have read a book on the topic you’re interested in? Have you read a book on the topic? Do you think most people have read more than 2 books on your topic? My guess is not many people have read more than 2 books on anything in this day and age. Have you read more than 2 books on your favorite topic?

I bet you have. You’ve probably also done a lot of research online, read some magazines on the topic, and heck, you’re probably even DOING your topic. This experience and information makes you a very knowledgeable source on this topic, in fact, it makes you an expert.

Don’t think because you don’t have a phd in basket weaving you can’t be an expert, because you can be, in fact, if you’ve made baskets ~ you probably already are.

What can I do an authority blog about?

We’re going to delve into choosing a topic tomorrow, but for right now realize you can do an authority blog on ANY topic. Really, seriously just about any topic will work. You may not want to do underwater basket weaving as your topic, because there may not be enough people interested to build a big enough audience to make it worth it for you.

So today think about the things in your life you love to talk about. Brainstorm, don’t limit yourself to what you think might be “good enough” or “right”. Just think about what you’re passionate about. Write things down.

Keep in mind though… (this one comes from personal experience) the topic you pick will be a long term investment. You’ll be writing about it for a long time to come so make sure it’s not a “fad” passion. :) You may know I have a natural pregnancy site. I was very passionate about natural pregnancy and childbirth a few years back. I could talk about it all day. Of course I was pregnant and having a baby. It lost it’s luster a couple years after having Hanna ~ so just keep that in mind. (oh if anyone’s interested in buying an authority site on natural pregnancy ~ or you know someone who is…) :)

Also keep in mind we’re looking for more general topics for this type of site ~ again we’ll go into this more tomorrow. But you don’t want to choose a really narrow focus ~ because you’re going to be talking about it forever, you want a topic that’s wide enough you can find something to talk about for a long time to come.

What if my topic won’t make me money?

Now is not the time to think about making money. :) Really… think about how much and for how long you can write about a topic. How many other people are interested in your topic. How you can write about the topic in different ways month after month. :) (don’t worry, I’ll be helping you with that one!)

Every niche can be monetized, somehow. That’s why I say don’t worry about it right now. You can use affiliate products, create your own products, or even create a big enough audience to get sponsors who pay you to advertise on your site. The money will come if you have the passion and the awesome content.  So seriously, don’t sweat the monetization at this point. OK?

With all these things it may seem like it’s going to be tough to be an authority blogger ~ actually it’s quite the opposite. Authority blogging has less “rules” to follow, it takes less time to complete your daily actions (you could do this easily in 2 or 3 hours a day), and if you choose a topic you love it will be fun and you won’t even realize you’re “working”. (which is my favorite part!)

If you have general questions about authority blogging feel free to ask, just remember… this is a series and I’ll probably be doing a whole post on your questions ~ but ask them anyway to make sure I cover what you want to know.

What a wonderful post on being an authority blogger. Apart from the awesome ideas I have learned form this post. I am also aware that becoming successful in the blogging world, you need a lot of patience. It is very rare for your site to pick up immediately you start it up but with time, hard work and dedication you will make it.

hee hee. I knew it was going to be you Dennis. :) If there are books, magazines, forums etc on your topic there's little chance you won't be able to make money on the topic. :) People don't invest a LOT of money to create a magazine or publish a book if there's no market for it.

Are you sure you don't want ANY profit reports ahead of time? Nothing worse then working on your passion for however long and suddenly realize there's no market for it.

When you said you were doing a series on authority blogs I didn't think I'd be that interested - that's why I didn't read this yesterday ;-) But wow, am I glad I did!

Thanks so much for your definition and description of an authority blog, I think all the guru-hype had really turned me against the term 'authority blog' but it's exactly what I've been building! I do need more help to focus and be more consistent. I've been over-analyzing the whole thing too, trying to juggle too many sites at once. It's a relief to know that 2-3 hours a day is all it will take. I am really, really looking forward to the rest of this series.

Thanks Jackie!

Your site is fantastic!! I love the voting element on you FAQ. You've got some really nice stuff going on over there. :)

Wow, thank you Jackie! I've been seeing my traffic increase and many of my pages come up in quite high positions in the SERPS just because I wrote with my audience in mind. The FAQ is a realatively new addition. I have a fairly large, and growing list of questions which I turn to when I'm not quite up for writing a full post. I started it all on one page, but now I'm thinking of a new page for each answer, it's meant to be better for SEO. What do you think?

I think an FAQ is a fantastic thing to have on a blog and it's something I'll be recommending soon for people. I think you could keep it on one page or you could do them each on their own posts and then have the FAQ page link to the full post. Either way ~ whichever is easiest for you.

Great post Jackie. Love the tips you talked about right away. I just recently did a video for my acne blog on my 3 favorite powerful P words - Persistence, Patience, and Passion. You mentioned 2 but referred to having patience - this is no make $10,000 in a week.

Everyone - creating an authority site on something you love is such an exhilarating experience. I started my blog 3 months ago and it is in the midst of taking off this very moment.

Never give up, enjoy the journey instead of trying to do everything right away, and love what you do! Do what you love and love what you do! It's the key to life - meaning the key to everyone!

Jackie knows what she is talking about so please listen to her :)

Thanks for another great blog post. Love all the information you have on your blog.

I have not been blogging for long but, I have so far got my blog ranked in the top 40 for a very competitive keywords using much of the information that you talk about in this post, and your other posts on your blog.

I think that anyone can get great rankings for just about any keyword they want to, if they just keep at it and realize that things take time.

Just though I would leave a rather random comment, but just to say you are doing an extremely good job of keeping a nice and informative blog which a rather enjoy reading when I have few moments of peace in the day. Thanks

Lots of time and effort! Blogging is all about being unique and consistent! Something that you seem to have got down to a key! Well done and thanks.

I'm not sure if an authority blog is for me but I appreciate the information. It made me think of the movie Julie and Julia - a great example of how someone built a hugely successful blog and profited big time from it - although not with affiliate links - more from selling her story afterwards. Anyway, for those who haven't seen the movie it's about a woman who starts a blog where she tackles one Julia Childs recipe per day and writes about it - it took her a full year to get through all the recipes. Well for the first 6 months not much happened and then all of a sudden she had a huge following - people visiting her blog and commenting and then another 6 months after that - she was contacted by a publisher and the rest is history.

Laura that's a great example (and a great movie!!). There are so many possibilities when you stick with a blog long term.

Hi Jackie,

I have been working on creating an authority blog on a topic that has more than 1 lac searches a month on google with moderate competition.

The problem is that out of those one lac searchers say only one or two would actually get down for long term involvement with the subject.

Its more kind of an impulsive topic. People feel like getting into it, but they quit the idea very soon because it is too complex for most of the people.

I have written a How to eBook on the subject. But any one who buys and reads it will most likely choose to stay away from the subject because of its sheer complexity. It is therefore difficult to have long term relationship with such people.

Please tell me whether such a topic is worth investing my time and effort into.

Are you passionate about the topic? Are you involved in the topic? If you can stay involved in the topic and continue to write content I'd say it's probably viable. If there are people interested in the topic I'd stick with it. Are there books and magazines written on the topic? If you find those things it's usually a pretty good indicator of possible profitability.

Hi Jackie,

For those of us who have a few niche sites, what do you think about creating an authority site which also supports the niche sites?

For example, if I had niche sites about dog training, dog parties and upscale dog clothing, how about an authority site about "the world of dogs" in which I also promoted by the products from each of my niche sites.

This seems like a good way to incorporate my previous work while also moving forward with a long term internet marketing plan. Does my logical make sense or am I missing something?

Thank you. I always enjoy reading your blog. You're the best. :-)

If it's a topic you're really interested in then yeah that can be a great idea. :) If you just did the niche blogs because of the numbers but don't have a bunch of interest in the topic then I would go with something else.

Hi Jackie,

I think this series was made for me. I've been following your posts since this past years "Squidoo Christmas Cash", and Niche Sites and even tried a few things you told us about. But this post makes me think that the "Authority Site" series is meant for me because I have a wide range of experience to blog about and have an idea of a general topic to cover it all under.
I have done so many different things to manage to make it from one day to the next for the last thirty plus years that I think the authority site scenario is going to be for me.

Thanks for all you have done and I'm anxiously waiting for your next post.

Vern

Sounds perfect Vern ~ can't wait to see it!!

Jackie,
This is very exciting, can't wait to get started.
I'm sure you will answer this further on in the series, but it is always a question that haunts me after I read certain posts by IM bloggers. So often, as you did in this post, I hear "you can do this in 2-3 hours a day" (writing posts and such), but realistically, the posts aren't enough, what about the link building and that article writing and posting, and a squidoo lens and so on? Wouldn't those be included in the "process" of a post?
I hope this makes sense.

This is an authority blog ~ you will not be doing a bunch of article writing (unless you want to), lenses etc. The 2 to 3 hours included everything you'll need to do. :)

Hi Jackie!

You mentioned to me awhile back that I should create a blog on my disability... would that be considered an authority blog?

And as far as you selling your pregnancy site, I think you really should check out http://flippa.com/. Or if you can wait a month or two for me to get my feet wet there, I would be more than happy to assist you in selling your site! ;)

Thanks!

Cindy

yes I do believe it would be ~ there's a lot you could do with that. I'm not sure you would want to do it about the disability per se, but about your life, living with the issues you face, and how you succeed in every day life. :) I'd love some help with selling the site. :)

I have been hearing about authority bloggers and websites for a few years now and I have to admit that it was a vague concept at first. But no matter how hard I try I just cannot seem to make this kind of greatness.

not sure it's about making "greatness" as much as it's about creating a site that is a powerful resource on any given topic. It takes more than 5 posts to that. :)

Thanks Jackie

According to my stats many of them come from search engines, sometimes blogs where I left comments, and in between from articles (I should really get into that more) - the stats plugin I use even show the keywords that was used to be directed to my site and I even used one or two of these to do new posts.

I am so looking forward to this new series of yours, I can't wait to open your e-mail in the late afternoons and see what new info you have for us.

I think your site is a great niche. Where is your traffic coming from? Search engines? blogs? articles you've written? stumbleupon?

All those different places tend to send a different kind of visitor. I think you're doing a great job on that site and just keep doing what you're doing.

To get more participation make sure you ask for it. At the end of your posts ask a question ~ ask people to make a comment about something related to the post. That should help a little.

We'll get into all of this as the next couple months come ~ you're on the right track! If you're getting 100 uniques a day you're doing quite well!

Hi Jackie

From your post I think I can safely assume that I have or am busy building an authority site. I've been blogging about the same topic for nearly 9 months now and I still have a million things I want to share with visitors to my site.

My first question is how do I know if I am building a relationship with my readers when I rarely get comments on any of my posts. My stats shows that I have at least 100 unique visitors a day, so it leaves me wondering if my posts are not interesting enough.

I cover a wide variety of subjects on my topic, have a few freebies, links to other posts on my blog, I even followed your example and put up a list of posts for easier access to older posts, I am really passionate about my niche and am even sharing some personal experiences in my niche with visitors. ( I am busy planning my granddaughter's party at the moment so I do write about it in between other posts.)

Sometimes I tend to get depressed, though. How am I ever going to sell my own products one day if I don't know if readers find the information I now provide, helpful? I am in the process of setting up an autoresponder for my newsletter, (hopefully this one will work this time), I have an e-book I want to sell and I mentioned to you a few weeks ago some of my other plans for the future.

Should I just keep doing what I am doing now or should I really concentrate on only one topic... maybe narrow down all the information and become an authority in a specific topic in my niche?

My apologies. Please feel free to delete the comment, as I am unable to do so.

Hi Bea,

These questions really need to be asked on the related squidoo posts :) That way people who have the same questions can find the answers I give. No one will look here for them. Most of these questions are answered in the comments of the squidoo posts already.

Hi Jackie, and thanks.

I've been reading the articles about Squidoo, and I've used your 'search' option for additional information. My questions are:

1. If we've made a mistake in a choice, do we go into Squidoo and delete the lens so someone else can use the url?
2. If there's only one of the product on Amazon, do we go ahead with the lens? It seems to me you answered that, but try as I might I cannot find where.
3. When we write the articles, do we use the same name? I noticed for you inversion table you use your name and picture on the lens, but could not find an article in Ezine with it.

I feel like I'm so slow compared with everyone else, but I'm also convinced that this is the best way for me to start out.

I really like the way you explain things, and appreciate your blog very much.

Fantastic post Jackie ~ Thanks for helping me see that I have been over-analyzing whether or not I have what it takes to be an authority blogger!

Hi Bea ~

There's no hurry. Just focus on the information you're working on. I get all comments from every post on this blog. So feel free to ask questions on any past post. I'm still there. :)

Remember ~ my job as a blogger is to keep giving people new content. Your job as an internet marketer is to stick with what you're working on. :) Don't forget the articles page on this site ~ the first few sections are all about doing squidoo. It will help you find any information you need on creating squidoo lenses.:)

Very helpful and interesting. I'm trying to follow along, but I can't keep up, so I hope you're not going anywhere so that I'll get the chance to catch up.

I'm still working on the Squidoo lenses to promote physical products, and wondered where I could ask some questions, since this is not about the same thing.

Do you ever go back to your comments sections on subjects that were covered in the past?

I'm learning as fast as I can...but it doesn't seem fast enough.
