When is a squidoo lens enough and when should you go for more?

May 05

It’s so easy to build a squidoo lens, and I think you should build lenses about everything you are doing, whether it’s related to your kids, your job, your hobbies, all of those things make great lenses.

There comes a point in time as an internet marketer though you have to decide if the project you are working on is a little bigger than a squidoo lens.  If it is, what else do you do?

This subject came up for me last week. I had a great idea and wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it.  I knew I would build a lens, but for this project a lens just didn’t seem quite big enough.  I was left wondering should I just do a really BIG lens or is this project big enough to take further?

How do you know when a topic deserves more than a lens?

Here are a few things that help me decide:

  • It’s something I am really passionate about
  • It’s a long term project I will be working on
  • It just feels like “something big”
  • It’s something I need continual motivation to stick with

Let’s talk about my latest project.  As you know Hanna will be two this weekend, and I have YET to LOSE THE BABY WEIGHT!! argh.  I have tried diet after diet and nothing is working very well or for very long. I recently found Fit Yummy Mummy.  A great lifestyle program focused on moms and getting them back to their “pre baby” body ~ if not better.

I got really excited once I read the program, it is something I feel I can make into a lifestyle and stick with and finally have some success.

I knew it would be a great squidoo lens, but for me it felt so much bigger.  I felt like it would be a great idea to start a blog, to chart my progress, keep me motivated, let others hear my story, and keep track of my goals.

I thought about doing this all in a lens so it would be in chronological order, but it would have been too big.  So I set up a wordpress blog Fit and Healthy Momma.  I’m going to include recipes, kitchen and cooking tips as well as information about my journey to becoming a fit yummy mummy.  (I did do a Fit Yummy Mummy squidoo lens too, but it’s just the basics, the blog will go into more detail, and I’ll run an RSS feed from the blog in the squidoo lens).

I have done some assessing of my lenses, and my websites and have come to realize that the products I use and love are the ones I’m making most of my sales on. I truly believe there is a difference in the energy of your writing and in what you say when you are using a product.

That’s why I thought actually doing Fit Yummy Mummy and recording my journey would also be a great way to increase sales for the product.  I have a couple other projects I am working on where I am using the product and my sites will be personal experiences of the product itself, not only reviews, but also my story.   I think when you can tell YOUR STORY it is very powerful.

If you are doing affiliate marketing think about the things you love, and use every day. There are affiliates for just about everything, and if you can’t find an independent affiliate program you can always use Ebay or Walmart.  So today I encourage you to find something you use regularly that you love, and write a lens on it, if it’s an ongoing story why not set up a blog and tell your story regularly?

I found a great example of that recently ~ a woman loves her crockpot.  She has set a goal to use her crockpot every day for the next year. She’s blogging about it and giving the recipes and her story of her crockpot cooking. I don’t think she is an affiliate marketer, but if she was, don’t you think she could regularly be selling some crockpots or cookbooks from her site? I sure do.

What did you use today? Whatever it is, take yourself to squidoo and build a lens.  If you get so excited you can barely contain your enthusiasm in a lens ~ build a blog and talk about it often!
