Wow, this is EXACTLY how I screwed up when I first found my “niche”.

As you know, I coach online marketing. My niche or sub-niche if you please, which is lesser known up to now is, I coach online marketing to those in direct sales (primarily an offline business up to a couple yrs ago)

My first and lasting mistake: “hey wait a sec, ANYONE with a website or blog can use this”.

I went for the easier target off the bat. Pure IM’ers and bloggers.

OOPS.

Now I’m pulling double duty, and will probably lose some of the people I have now as I try to tighten the focus of my specifics to what it was supposed to be in the first place.

I blog about a primal lifestyle but it is based on my experiences so it has been somewhat easy to appeal to a specific audience. My google traffic has increased and overtime the bounce rate has decreased (great thing).

You have it kind of right. It is actually a little more broad as its more than just diet and fitness. It’s also about lifestyle – sleep, sunlight, play, stress, going barefoot, avoiding stupid mistakes, using your brain…

It may seem general but it is a actually quite specific. The audience of my blog are people who live the primal lifestyle and simply want to follow someone who is becoming an authority within the community and/or people who are on the fence of diving into the primal lifestyle. It also appeals to people who wish to lose weight by going against conventional wisdom and people who want to become more fit. It is mostly about food and fitness, but more too.

Ok… I realize I am going on and on… it’s hard to explain. Everything I blog about deals with the primal lifestyle but I feel that anyone is at least somewhat interested in this. So, it is specific but it can truly appeal to almost anyone. Anyone who lives a primal lifestyle/wants to start living a primal lifestyle/wishes to change there current lifestyle for the better…

I think I am going to buy the book… I am going to at least try the exercise!

Thanks for bringing this to the light. I’m SO guilty of what you’re saying – trying to “talk to everybody”…

When I hear veteran IMers talk about driving TARGETED traffic I always would wonder HOW I could do it if I’m not using paid traffic. I think having the “talk to your niche” mindset will go a long way toward accomplishing this.
