Why Aren’t My Keywords Coming Up In Google?
Jun 19
Today I received a question to my How to Get Backlinks lens over on squidoo. It was a good question and one I seem to get pretty often. I thought I would take Adam’s question and answer it here for the benefit of not only Adam, but for you too.
hello jackie, i would like to say how good your site is and has been very helpful to me. I have a website adken.co.uk selling sash windows and conservatories that i have just started with a friend. we are indexed by google, i have found that keywords to content and all that stuff all comes up 100% but still only find my site when adken is with the search, would like to show up for the keywords conservatories and sash window, when i have analysed other sites it shows the only difference is that they have backlinks,, but they still have no pagerank yet they arrive on the first search for the keywords,? please could you send me in the right direction about what these backlinks need to be and from what sites they need to be, yours sincerly adam taylor.” –adam taylor
Since Adam’s issue is wanting to be at the top of the search engine results page for those keywords I started by looking at his keywords. I did this by putting his keywords in wordtracker’s free keyword tool (http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com) to see how many searches they were getting each day, and then I put them in google with quotes to see how many competing pages he was working against.
Conservatories: 119 daily searches, 3,620,000 competing pages
sash window: 59 daily searches, 325,000 competing pages
WOW. That’s gonna take some work Adam.
So I went to Adam’s site about Conservatories and Sash Windows to take a look and see what he has done. The site looks pretty good, but working with such competitive keywords it’s going to be difficult. I might suggest you look around and do more keyword research and see if you can find some keywords that are not as competitive and have more daily searches. You can do that by putting any related word in the Free Keyword tool and then checking them for competing pages in google. I have a feeling you can find some related (and they may be longer keywords aka: long tail keywords) keywords that will make it much easier to accomplish your goal.
Here’s some suggestions I would make.
1. More unique content. The more information you can provide for people the better. It also provides the search engines with more content to pull less competitive keywords from.
2. It’s going to take time with keywords this competitive, but don’t give up. I’m sure you will find you come up for other keywords you hadn’t anticipated relatively soon. You mentioned you just started this site, it will take some time to get there. I know I always get impatient and expect results much quicker than sometimes is possible. Be patient, and keep building backlinks.
3. On each page of your content work in your major keywords and link them back to your homepage url. This will give you some great internal backlinks.
4. Backlinks, backlinks, backlinks. I would suggest a full out assault on creating backlinks. I would make creating backlinks 90% of my time spent on this business.
- I would start with Article Marketer and write articles to be distributed to the article directories, making sure to use your keywords as anchor text in your links in your bio box.
- Find some other keywords that are less competitive and use them for squidoo lenses and hubpages
- Submit your site to directories (or hire someone else to do it)
- Blog comment (on relevant sites)
- Get active in relevant forums and use your keywords as backlinks in your sig file.
- Start a blog on your site, and on other free blog sites online. Add relevant content and make sure to link to your site, using your keywords, in the blog roll as well as any articles you can reasonably add them in.
If you continue to work with these keywords it’s going to take time. Those are hugely competitive, and it really will be difficult.
This is one thing I have learned in my time online, and I made this mistake for a very long time. Choose your keywords WISELY and FIRST!!
Keyword research is of utmost importance when you decide to put a site up. If you are expecting to receive visitors from google you have to choose keywords you can get to the top of the results page.
What’s a Good Level of Competition for My Keywords?
That’s a good question, and one that will differ depending on your internet marketing strategy.
If you are doing a squidoo lens, or hubpage, look for keywords with less than 30,000 competing pages.
If you are doing a keyword sniper type site, look for keywords with less than 100,000 competing pages.
If you are going to go for an authority site you can do more competitive keywords, but why would you want to. Try to stick with the less than 100 thousand competing page keywords and you will know for sure you can do what you need to do to get them to the top of the search engines.
Adam, I hope I have answered your questions, as well as some of the other questions I have received about keywords. If you have any other questions, please leave a comment and I will answer them.

Nice introduction on keyword selection. Personally, I don’t look at the number of competing pages. I do take it into some consideration, but mainly I look at the strength of the top ranked site. If there is a large number of competing sites, but the #1 guy is a PR 1, I will go for it.
Just stumbled across this site. You’ve got some good tips here. This is exactly the ind of info I’ve been looking for. Thanks and keep it up.
